    Question Twin Tuner Question

When a twin tuner pvr eventually becomes available for VAST will I need to upgrade the LNB? My LNB only has one cable coming out of it so does that mean that it can only receive one station at a time regardless of how many tuners the pvr has? I ask because my neighbour has just had a free VAST install and he has 2 cables coming from the LNB and he was told that the second cable, although not currently used, is for when a pvr function becomes available -- perhaps they meant twin tuner??

To be clearer, if say Humax makes a twin tuner pvr for VAST will it need two input cables -- one for each tuner? Or, will it just use the one input cable from the LNB and distribute that signal to each tuner?

you will need two cables (dual lnb) to make the most of a twin tuner box

Specifically if you were wanting to record a stream on an opposite polarity to the ones you are viewing

Much will depend on the configuration of the decoder, whether it has internal splitting for the same polarity for both tuners, or not.

It's more likely there will be two separate LNB inputs on the decoder.

At present, all VAST channels are vertically polarised, but that doesn't mean they will all stay that way in the future, so it would be beneficial to have a dual output LNB with a separate cable for each input.

In the meantime, will all vertical transponders, you could use a 2-way splitter (which I don't like) or a multiswitch.

A splitter will divide the available signal in half, whilst a multiswitch performs the same function of providing signal to multiple outputs, it also amplifies the signal, to compensate for any distribution loss.

I doubt it will be done internally transit, but they may have a loop out of the first or both LNBs so a loop cable can be used to feed into the 2nd input.

Many standard satellite decoders have a sat loop out, and as long as sat/polarity was the same you could theoretically daisy chain multiple receivers, even in different rooms. Ive seen more than a couple of Aurora installations done in this way.

From what I have read affecting both Austar areas and Foxtel, all new installations will now be serviced by an IQ or Mystar stb which need dual lnb at least.
According to the March TV guide, they quote all packages as including a Mystar.
I gather now the norm for both VAT and Foxtel is to instal a dual LNB and terminate the unused one for later use.
A freind returning to the area (Austar) has just had 3 stb's installed at their new location but they used Titans and ran 3 cables, one to each stb location.
I never looked too closely at the dish except to see the 3 cables attatched so I know there are singles, dual and Quad LNB's , but a TRIPLE ??
I stand unequivicably behind everything I say , I just dont ever remember saying it !!

Wink Quad and Quatro LNB usage.

Gordon, this should clarify what's needed. A Quatro LNB plus Multiswitch would be needed for more than two Twin Tuner Decoders.

Quad LNB is used for 4x receivers or 2x twin tuner receivers where a quattro LNB is used with a switcher and can distribute to as many receivers as needed

    That's not Kosher, needs reporting.

I've never heard of a 'tri' output LNB..... it's more likely a quad output with one unused output.

For more than 4 tuners.... there's no need for a quad/quattro LNB at all.

A standard Dual output 10700 LNB into an appropriate multiswitch will give you connections to as many multi-tuner decoders as you want.

Eg: a 2 input (H & V) 8 output multiswitch will supply signals to 8 individual tuners (or 4 dual tuners, or in the case of iQHD, 4 quad tuners, as both H & V are split internally)

A 16 output multiswitch can feed 8 dual tuners, etc, etc.

    A Twin Tuner VAST box.
It looks like an old Hotchip terrestrial box.

Well I'll be, now we have a choice of getting the new UEC twin tuner or waiting for the Humax.

I'm a little shy of UEC after the last 2 years, think I'll wait.

I wonder how much it is? -- they're not answering their phone right now.

I see from the pic in the brochure that it requires dual lnb inputs and it runs on 12V with no 240V input so it must come with a transformer. Also it now uses 36 watts which is about double what the single uses.

If this is powered up all the time as the single tuner model is [even in standby] then this becomes a significant cost in money for mains connected users and a significant amount of electricity for some off-grid users.

Pretty subjective I know but -- it just looks ugly.

Getting back to my original dual lnb question though it seems from page 11 of the user manual that you can connect the lnb-1 output to the lnb-2 input which they call a "Loop Through Connection" so I guess that this means that a single lnb will work ok??

Your question has now been answered, after reading the new VAST UEC DSR4639 manual; the box will take 2 lnb inputs if you have them, however it has an output as well for a pass thru loop cable to use when there is only one Lnb cable.

For the travelers out there; it is a 12vDC box with an external power supply for 230v.
    Cheers, Tiny

I see from the User Manual (VASTDSR4639Manual_rev20121129)

that you can loop though from LNB1 out, to LNB2 in ..... (page 11)

(I want one.....just hope the HDD is quiet running ....for a bedroom)

Methinks unless you use a twin LNB, you are limited to all channels of one polarity, either H or V, but not a mix of H and V.

all vast is on Vertical transponders ATM....

but good question..... can it record/watch 2 channels on different vertical transponders ? (using the loop though.....)

I think it should be OK....

There was also, just shown, a UEC advertisement on Imparja for the Vast DSR4639 DUAL CHANNEL HD RECORDER

That's OK, but do I need a separate installation for Fox, or can I just use a Quad or Quatro on the one dish.
There are many configurations that haven't been considered!
A later refurbishment would cost far more than an idle cable run/LNB, than for dish/LNB duality.

Yes, but not as I would envisage in the future, or if you wish Fox on the same dish.
