Naughty Pioneer DVR-645H-S
I have one of these which matches the Pioneer Plasma TV (seperate media box). It gave me grief since day one but never worried too much until it became just impossible to use. The fault happens like this. It works just perfectly and then you pick up remote to operate it and nothing happens, no operation. First though is , F n remote, batteries must be playing up. You try front panel controls and nothing. You leave it for awhile and then works like nothing happened.
I have pulled it apart to clean and inspect. Looks perfect so suspect software/firmware/bios and that sort of stuff. Anyone got similar stories. It has been replaced with a Panasonic Bluray HD Rec Twin Tuner. Works very well but Pioneer easy to work and fill of many great recordings. Also the USB input never ever worked!

If it was still under warranty I would be taking it back, if not it sounds like it would make a good wheel chock.

I have owned since 2007 so warranty long gone. Would love to repair it as already got wheel chocks. I think it cost around 800 bucks on special.
There is an 1800 number for Pioneer support where you can talk to a tech and they are very helpful, would pay to call them as it could be something simple.

This suprises me, as our household has a Pioneer DVD Player purchased back in the last century (back when a player cost $800+!) that just keeps on going.
Know your pain to some extent, although our experience has been with LG and Samsung DVD recorders - both devices about as useful as boat anchors. Only good thing, the Pioneer was quickly reinserted in their place because it does its job!
Although must disclose the only quirky thing about our musuem piece is it sometimes doesn't recognise certain audio discs when first turned on, eject, put in a disc I know that works, play a track, eject, and put back in the previous disc and all good. Its a bit like an old car, you have to warm it up and treat is with a bit of respect before tearing down the road
