Default Phone Rings - Nobody There

Hoping some telco person can give me heads up. I receive lots of phone calls and when I answer it, there is nobody there and then after about 10-15 seconds in gives me the hang up signal.

This happens quite a bit, I really notice it on Saturday afternoons when I'm home.

My phone is with Primus, so I'm guessing they wont be able to do anything about it as they dont own the line. Telstra do....

    Any suggestions ?

Being a Saturday afternoon, I would suspect it is telemarketers.

It's a program they use that multi-dials a large volume of numbers at the same time but doesn't have the operators at their end to connect with more than a small percentage. As a result, your phone rings, you answer and no-one is there. That's because other people answered first and did manage to get put through. They just keep redialling your number along with everyone else they missed until they finally catch you.

    G'Day Cobber,
My understanding is that these SE Asia call centres use reverse directories and multi dialing, accept the first one that answers, and hang up on the rest. They're Pariahs in their own country.

These types of calls are commonly telemarketers.

    It's an automated logging robot.

What happens is the number dialled, date & time of when the call is answered is logged on a database.

Because there in no human caller (at this time) as soon as the call is answered, the robot hangs up.

The data is collated and then provided/sold to telemarketers so they know the best time to 'catch' somebody at home.

I've never seen a telemarketer call that CND isn't blocked.

a long shot , but it may be a line fault. one leg of your pair may be crossed with someone elses. as thier phone rings it induces enough current to cause your phone to ring.

Yep.... that's the standard CND charge from Telstra.

CND is pretty much useless for telemarketers as I've never seen one that doesn't come up as 'Private" or "out of area".
