My favourite is still pioneer...latest is dvr-115 I think for the mighty sum of about $35 these days...How can you go wrong?
I've had about 8 pioneers and they all worked well.
My DVD burner died last night its a pioneer dvr 108, can anyone suggest a replacement based on their preference please?
will any burner fit into my old Pentium 4, as I am told the new types are both ide and sata?
Your thoughts are appreciated.

Thanks mandc,
Yes I would agree my pioneer has been very good, so I think that will be the one.
Will it work in old P4 ?
Thanks Buddy, now I just have to find out if it is IDE or Sata ?

I've had very good results from LG DVD-rom drives.
So far only seen one failure and I don't know what caused it (was in a client's machine).
I use them exclusively - the Koreans do make some good electronics.
Thanks Guys for all the input.
Got the wife to pull the Pc apart looks like its an IDE she said there is a flat ribbon like black cable connecting the burner so that sounds like an IDE connection.
MSY has the dvr-115 IDE at $32 and its on the way home so looks a quick and cheap fix. YES.............
Thanks again guys
Just when you thought the fat lady was singing, I read a thread somewhere that said I have to convert my IDE cable from a 40pin to 80 pin?? Apparently Pioneer recommends this and it was changed on the Dvr 109 model ?? Anyone heard of this ???
Hi myf360f1,
The cable connection on both ends is the same but the reason for recommending an 80pin IDE cable is because the pioneer optical drives since the 109 model can run at Ultra DMA 4 instead of the more common Ultra DMA 2 speed for most optical drives. You just need the standard IDE 80 pin HDD cable. You can use the 40 pin but better performance on the 80 pin cable.
Very simple procedure to change myf360f1.
Cheers
thats it
red stripe or stripe of ide cable to right site of device
yellow wire of 4 pin power to right also.
if 2 ide devices are on 1 cable, you must set 1 device as master,1 as slave

Hi TvKing,
Thank you for that explanation, I assume the connection on the mobo will be the same for the 40 and 80 pin?
@ Phil,
Mate you lost me back at the turn, I will try and decipher what your saying. Thank you any way.
lol sorry
yes 40 & 80 pin ide cables are same plug.
on any ide(ribbon cable) theres a coloured stripe on 1 edge.
this relates to pin 1 on the motherboard connector.
also if your looking at the dvd or hard drive from the back, pin 1 is on the far right of the 20 pins
therfore, the coloured stripe of the cable goes to the right hand side of the device.
master\slave is a smaller set of pins at the back
settings are marked on the top of the drive.

Thanks Phil and TV King,
Bought a cable anyway but turns out I had one installed, it just says ASUS cd cable but looks the same.
Thanks Tvking, tested and all working well, it burns at 8 speed which is what the old one did, so I'm not sure that I have advanced any.
What is important though is the stack of kids dvd's that have piled up that I now have to burn.
Cheers all
maybe u should invest in 1 of
and rip the dvds straight to the media player
no more disks or dvd players
