Help for newbie please

hi all,
i am going to buy hubbie a gps, either tom tom or navman. still deciding.
he asked me the following and i have no idea so thought i would ask the experts!

He want to know, can u have the gps running but not program a route, and it will still show you or tell you only the red light and speed cameras?

1. i dont know if it shows where you are going even if you havent programed a route.

any help before i buy would be appreciated.

3: and it will show you moving as you drive

tomtom and navman are expensive look at this thread as there is a cheaper and better alternative which will allow you to use the same software
