I have decided to give the torrents away and remember reading about the Usenet / Usenext thing before the great crash, so I thought i'd give it a go.
I signed up for that 2 week trial thing, and have downloaded the software.
Now I am a complete newbie to the usenet world so treat me nicely.
I have managed to pick up a few video files and stuff, and so far it seems like the way to go. However I intend on paying for access to this when my trial runs out and I want to make sure I get the most out of it.
Can someone please steer me in the right direction here, maybe post up a bit of a tutorial on what to do, coz from the looks of things, this usenet is an enormous thing and i'd like to avoid any pitfalls or simply just getting lost in the jungle.
Thanks.

NZB is your friend
use a decent binary client, like grabit (shemes.com) or alt.binz (altbinz.com)
goto a nzb site and grab some nzbs or goto a search engine like and search for something like.... haha i was going to give you some examples and made sure you get something meaningful and found the sites down for a few hours for maintenance.
gimme a yell on msn, philquad@hotmail.com

Have to agree with nerd1. I search at Don't forget to change the default settings. I use Grabit at to download. I choose to pay $US12.00 through Paypal for one month only for 20 GB. This gives you 30 days to download and the download counter is rest to zero at the start of the next calendar month. eg sign up today, January 17, download 19.9 GB in January and you get another 20 GB to download from February 1 to February 16. There are user forums at Shemes, but if you have winrar and quickpar installed on your computer many problems take care of themselves. I can consistently download at about 1 Mb/s in off-peak times and 300 to 400 MB/s at peak times, on Optus cable, without being concerned about high uploads, that tend to get torrent users into trouble with this ISP.
Yeah as nerd1 said, join a nzb site and your searching is made much easier..
I use nzbmatrix the most....
you pay for usenet ?
I just use newsbin and suck the user groups dry.
Hey Trash, I just downloaded the newsbin trial and tried to connect to news.optusnet.com.au without success. When I googled, I also discovered that their retention of binaries is poor. Yes, I pay for shemes, but if it has been posted to usenet in the last 90 days, as indicated by independent searches, I can always download immediately. Costs me less than $100.00 per year. I had the new episode of Prison Break in 10 minutes yesterday
Try these guys if you go to multiple months on there site 12 months is something like AU $50.00 for about 20 gb per month.
You also get a free copy of New Rover.
For those that arent aware , Internode offers free access to its Newgroups which run off supernews and have the same retention rate if you have ADSL with them. I wish I could get ADSL2.
i been using newshotsing.com for years
$10 each a month for me & a member here(we share) for unlimited.
grabit's free
nzbsrus.com & binsearch

that looks like a pretty good deal
I'm using newshosting unliminted. I only use it on the odd days and grab about 100GB off news groups every month.
binary news groups is available with internode (not for long though, unless they've changed their mind again) and Koala/Blitz. But any other "free" news servers will not have binary groups (that I am aware off).
I can download at at full speed of upto 10Mb/s all day. I'm on ADSL2+ with iinet... just wished I had more quota. or christmas all year round (quota free )
one of the best usenet tutorial site's is
Should help you on your way.

woodstock
an extra dollar gets you unlimited speeds and this has maxed out 8mbit connections.
note: this is a lifetime special
could someone give a quick rundown on how this works?
is it superior to rapidshare?
I like things simple so.
There are a number of free news search engines these are two.
Now what you perhaps want is to download a program or TV show or whatever. Simply enter the name of the item and with luck you will find a file for download something like ABC.nzb. NZB files are a collection of links to the parts of the download and most News reader can use them to download the entire file.
When searching make sure the file is complete and has all the parts. You can also limit the time frame of your search to what you’re looking for so if the show was on last night in the US limit it to 1 day to limit the results.
I use News Rover and find it very good. It associates itself with NZB files so if you open one it starts to download for you. It also has its own search service. News Rover costs around $30.00 plus a small yearly fee for continued upgrades and access to its own search service.
One other tip set your news client for the maximum number of connections your provider allows – I use 15 simultaneous connections and stuff screams down.
I use these guys 10 GB per month is US $43.35 per year plus they give you a free copy of News Rover but its limited to only being used on their servers and after 12 months the search service stops unless you pay its subscription but that not a real problems as you can use any of the others like the two above.
No ratios – No broadcasting your IP to all the other people downloading.
Most News server providors have free trial periods and News Rovers is free for 30 days trial. Don't bother trying hacking that as it phones home to its search server which knows if your ligit or not.
In otherwords it's the next generation of Bulletin Board Services?
