We charge our 18 YO Son $100 a week as well , he doesn't know but we have setup an account for him that it goes into that we will give him when he moves out.,
When he started work we sat down with him and worked out how much it would cost him to move out and even sharing with 3 mates it was going to cost about $210 per week minimum so he saves the extra $110 per week himself .
I think being a parent is about preparing them for the real world , charging him board has nothing to do with us needing him to pay for things it is totally about him living like the adult he now is.

Mate, with that income, how about she pays all the bills for your place.. and you pay her $100 per week?

I'm guessing her $100 board covers all accommodation, food, use of power/gas/water/phone/internet, etc.

That's incredibly ungrateful, bitching about $100 for all that, when her income is that amount.

    I agree with everyone else.

Let her discover for herself what the real cost of living is, out on her own.

Once she does move out.... I'm tipping there'll be more than one time she'll want to come back home.

The reason I paid $3000 for her course earlier this year was so that she would have a qualification that would allow her to work in an industry that has lots of jobs and plenty of shifts available, which in turn would mean she has plenty of money and wouldnt need to bot off me.

I am going to stick to my guns on this one, hell , I might tell the rest of the household that I am only paying $100 a week inclusive My missus also thinks I am being unreasonable hitting her for $100.

Interestingly she hit me up for my DSP card this morning to get a discount on a course she wants to do

I think $100 / week is more than reasonable.

I used to pay $150 / week, and my wage wasn't as high as $800 / week.

I still managed to save and buy myself a car. Pay for my own lunch everyday, meals when I wasn't home, sporting clubs, entertainment, etc.

Yeah I like the idea if you pay her the $100 a week and she pays the household's living expenses.

Give it one quarter and she'll be asking for more money

Let her set her own rate to rent the room, then hit her for her share of every other expence for running the household. If theirs 3 of you then divide every expence by 3. She will then find out the real cost of living. Dont forget to ask her to pay a bond. Remind her she also has to contribute an equal share of time to cover the household chores.

Kids have it to easy these days, mine included.

Life wasn't meant to be easy, lots of kids will find out that for themselves in the future, if you think that she's not paying her way well that's fair she should do.When she brings home the 18 year old grand children you'll be able to remind her of just how well she didn't understand you. My grand daughter is the same age and she's giving her parents hell.

my old lady had a rule - 25% of whatever we earnt was board.
The old man adjusted that to 100% if we went on the dole - nobody went on the dole !!

we have never asked board from our kids, admittedly neither has yet had a full time job but both are fast approaching that time in their life when this will happen and I still feel that the missus will still not take money off them. This is due to both of us wanting our kids to have what neither of us had as kids of their age. I only wish that they would consider the cost of things and at least make an attempt to cut their energy usage, why do all light s need to be on all the time has me beat, but it is a bridge we will cross when we get to it.

I'm 28 and been out of home since I was 19 and only paid 30% of my part time job as board and also saved up for a car. When I first moved out a third of my wage went into rent and then there was car repayments, utilities, food and nothing left in the end. That woke me up for sure.

$100 a week board is very cheap for living and teenagers will complain because they have no idea of the cost of living. I would just say to them you will pay for all your own food, do your own laundry and pay money towards the utilities. One of the hardest things to save up for is a home deposit, they will not understand this until they decide they want to buy a house and think it will just be given to them.

If they are studying to improve their job prospects, I would not charge board. If they are working and earning and income I'd charge them a set amount depending on their income. Show them the bills each quarter and ask them to help pay for them if they really complain.

Even worse would be having a pregnant teenage daughter at home!

Default A third of the wage sounds fair.

When I was earning 10 pound a week.

    My board was 3 pound
    Car payment was 3 pound
And 4 pound to spend on grog petrol and smokes.

And that was plenty to cover everything.

    a third for your savings
    a third for your rent
