Depends on your location, which is?

edit: noticed in your othet thread you have Austar, so I presume you're in Australia.

That being the case, you won't be able to receive American FTA satellite directly, as the beam footprints don't cover Australia.

Maybe you could find programs streamed over the internet, but regardless of how big a dish you had, you won't receive signals directly off American sats.

If you're in North America then I would check out
Those guys are only into chasing feeds and FTA sat on both C and Ku bands. You'll obviously need at least a dish for both bands and a HD receiver that blindscans.
You can also checkout lyngsat to see what's around

Edit: I see we have now discovered you're an Arrsi!

Once again, it depends where you are and what equipment you use.

From most parts of Australia, there are sats which carry Asian, Indian, Middle Eastern and some European programming, plus 'feeds' which may be news, sporting events and other outside broadcasts.... mostly on C-band, which you'll generally need a dish from 2.3m upwards.

There are also Ku band signals which have a variety of sats available, including feeds on most of them.

Check and ensure you check that the sat has a footprint that covers your area.

Some are FTA, others are encrypted and require a subscription to view.

As Leroy suggested, an HD decoder with blindscan is highly recommended.
