    Default DIY Ultrasonic Cleaner

    Hi Guys,

I was browsing around the Silicon Chip site when I stumbled across an old article for an Ultrasonic Cleaner.

As I do all of my own automotive work the idea was very appealing, so I did some further research and came across a simple design involving some transducers, pc to generate the signal and a standard audio amp for powering.

What I don't know is the effectiveness and size container I'd be able to use with a couple of 50w transducers?

    Jaycar have transducers, although costy

And as usual ebay as the china cheap model, which visually looks the same as the jaycar unit and has the same specs.

Then again you can get a whole china spec unit for 30 bucks, might be better off grabbing 3 or 4 of these and slapping the transducers & driving circuit on a bigger tub?

Has anyone else built one of these units or know a bit about them?

    Cheers!

I intended to make one many years ago, but had trouble sourcing big enough transducers at the time. I'm talking back in about 1980 and I wanted it big enough to fit a whole carby body in. I did end up buying one of these the other day though, and even though it's only small it was a good price and too hard to pass up.

Personally, i've not found that good for cleaning after all.
I even bought a higher freq one (That was suppoed to be better), and i didn't notice the difference.

Still had to manualy clean this and that. Some people recommend washing up liquid to be added etc, if any grease etc.

If you haven't used one before, i'd get the Aldi and have a play.

Back in the old days when we used to be able to use freon they were good. And that was with a 20KHz transducer in a 4L bain maree container (about the size of a large loaf of bread) I've heard of guys using white spirit in them too, but they always recommend not to use flammable liquid in them, so could be a bit risky. Be worth trying outdoors maybe?

    Try finish dishwashing tabs .
You will not use anything else after you have tried it.

Just rinse with good dose of water (or vinegar) to bring the PH back to normal when finshed. Dont leave the residue on the parts as it is fairly alkaline (Just your parts that you cleaned, Ultrasonic clearner will be ok)

    Cheers
