    Default Bench grinder

Hey, we found an old bench grinder on the side of the road, but when u turn it on, it just makes a loud humming noise and doesnt work lol. The shaft is hard to turn also. What should I be checking, because if it's not too expensive, I'd like to repair it.

I'd be checking the bearings the shaft runs on, sounds like they've seized up

I'd squirt WD40 where the bearings are and only attempt further repair efforts if it is an antique (pre-China product).
Those small bench grinders typically have a very low start up torque. If you can't hand crank it up to speed after letting the WD40 soak a while it is probably not worth the effort. Giving it a spin with a power drill might loosen it up too.

could also have a bent shaft, have seen that happen before and if u found it on the side of the road, it may have fell of a truck (excuse the pun) and the impact with the road may have bent the shaft

It was on someone's hard rubbish pile.....but we fixed it.....was just a whole lot of dirt and crap in it, we cleaned out the bearings and freed up the shaft, and now it works Now I have a working bench grinder.

    Cheers, Gab

Hard rubbish collections are amazing for what people throw out.

I still can't get over the Perreaux SM3 preamp that I literally stumbled upon.
