I'm not familiar with the NESS touch screen but most other manufacturers allow installer programming from theirs. As for the $83 cable, it won't be simply a serial cable inspite of the standard plugs at each end. They're typically a dongle.
I just spent the day installing a Ness D8x security panel, replacing my old C&K panel that died, and connecting in the existing sensors, reed switches, external siren etc, and all good so far.
This kit comes with the new touch screen pad, which seems to allow a fair degree of 'User' programming, but does not from what I can see allow me to get into Installer programming.
Does anyone know if this is a limitation of the touch screen pad?
If I knew the pin-outs for the serial cable I'd use the Ness Comms software and programme the panel with my laptop, but the cable costs $83, a huge amount I think for a basic serial cable using standard fittings at each end.
cheers

You can use any RS232 serial cable to connect and program your NESS alarm system using your computer. I use and RS232 to USB cable that I picked up from jaycar for $30 ()
P.S: I am a NESS dealer!
"I can't believe you totaled a mammoth"
P master code E gets you into enhanced programming
p installer code e will then get you into installer programming.
If you dont know your installer code, check the ness manual. and if you haven't changed
the installer code. i BEG you to do so
WHY?
It's obvious ITSavvy is a DIYer, and as he said, he has just finished installing the alarm himself and judging by his pseudonym, he will also be programming it. So who does he have to hide the installer code from? Anyway, to access Installer Program mode on a Ness D8x, you first have to enter the Master code, so ITSavvy will control exactly who accesses Installer Program mode.
With NESS panels I find it quicker to get into programming "the other way"
True, But i think changing your installer code is a good practice.
Also, the "other way" is convenient. But i shall not mention it here
