Default ghost image to new drive

    Hi,
i need some help, maybe someone had this issue before, ive got a 60GB hdd in one of my computers (20GB partition for windows and the rest in partition data) i got a 320GB that i want to use to replace the 60GB, so i took a ghost image off the 20GB partition, made a 50GB partition on the 320GB drive and applied the image, ghost ran fine but it would'nt boot, i hooked the 320 hdd as a slave and set it active in windows disk manager, then it would boot with the black screen and the windows logo (with the scrolling bar under) then into the blue screen with the logo, but thats it, the logo looks much smaller and it just hangs there?? ive tried xp cd recovery (fixboot and fixmbr), when its hooked up as a slave and i boot windows the partition looks fine, (it has all the same folders as the 20GB partition) i also tried partition table doctor and it said the boot sector was fine wrote a new mbr, i dont really want to reinstall windows as this is a close to new install with everything set up with all the apps, drivers and stuff, so any help would be greatly appriciated.

    cheers

    Gav

I've personally come to the opinion that N**ton Ghost is shite; I've used "Acronis True Image" to "deploy new drive" with good effect and the Partition size didn't seem to matter; a brand name doesn't count for much when something else just works. I'll admit however I'm about two versions behind the shiniest and newest.

ive used ghost for years, even ghosting images to other drives, but this is the only time it didnt work 100% (ghost has got me out of the shit many times) dont know if its because of the much bigger size jump, 60GB to 320GB or what, does acronis true image come as a bootable image/disk?
    anyway thanks for the advice

Ghost is bullet proof, you just need to know a bit about what you are trying to do.

You have a windows boot sector problem, not an imageing problem I suspect.

You may have also gone from an old bios to a new 48 bit LBA.

Or you have copied a primary partition to a secondary, the permutations are endless.

You aren't also going from ide to sata are you?

your best bet is to do a complete drive copy at once instead of a partition at a time. It gives you the option to resize in the destination menu.

I have done 40gb to 750gb this week without issues.

Also all windows updates patches were done weren't they??

No mate, ghostpe is what the kiddies in the forums use.

Ghost corporate is the one to use professionally.

I take the negative opinions of ghost of people on this forum as a bit humourous, and that is being extremely kind.

Have you tried doing a Windows repair on the drive after ghosting.

Boot from the Windows CD then not the first repair offered which asks for a repair disk but the second one where Windows setup scans the system for prior installs. When it finds it, It should give the option to repair it where it will recopy files and fix things like boot sectors etc.

You will need a floppy with any special device drivers like SCSI but if its just IDE it should be fine.

I'm a Linux user -hav'nt used windows for years

However when windows was installed isn't it tied to the master drive and the motherboard by number or something? I remember that I could not change the motherboard and run the same disk with windows on it - I had to reinstall windows with the new motherboard.

Changing the master drive had the same problems Has this changed?

I use ghost corporate V8. or 9 depends on what I pickup off the bench.

The corporate versions are the better ones IMHO.

can email you the exe if you like.

Make sure the same LBA translation scheme is on for both drives in CMOS.
For example HP use LBA left bit shift mode or some such.

Else you can boot from xp cd and run a repair.

i think ghost may have to get the arse, i used Acronis to copy the partition to a larger drive, no probs at all, easy to use, booted fine, the only thing is that it bring back a partition that i deleted, (clone disk maybe?? i didnt see any clone partition) complete with data???? as i said ghost has never let me down thoughout the years, well ya learn something/software everyday.
    cheers everyone, i appriciate it

I'm a huge fan of Acronis True Image and IMHO I reckon it is better than ghost and simpler to use than ghost.

ive never had much luck with cloning
in true image, i went to make a backup of a clean install, but then it said cloning partition 45 mins.? so i freak and cancel thinkin its gunna do a 60 gig clone.
so i did a backup of C only, that looks like i can restore from boot with f11 trick.
sound right? not really for me but im sick of reinstalling on other ppls everytime they crash them.
how do you do it mick?

i just did a hardware upgrade, BUT im using the same drives...
all i did was remove any reference to the Moobo chipset (in this case intel) and then let windows reinstall the drivers for each piece of kit
