Wondering what your model number is please sanity
They are both called WD TV Live but the newer ones have wireless included

The new ones are WDBGXT0000NBK-01 but they have issues with the back usb port and external HDD's with USB3 and large hd files that has yet to be fixed. I actually bought the older model (WDBAAP0000NBK-01) before they ran out because of this and my new one (with wireless) is sitting in the cupboard until a fix comes along.

Thanks mandc for once it is an advantage to have a superseded model which will obviously do the job albeit not wirelessly.

My new model works perfect on wireless and ADSL1. I only use ethernet because my house is smart wired and there is a vacant connection right next to it....its always better to use a wired connection than wireless if available. At a guess any issue was dealt with via a firmware update.

I have a 1TB USB (USB2) drive plugged in with no issues.

If you want to sell yours Mandc, let me know I was going to go and buy another from JB this week.

...I am ever the optimist and still hope for a firmware fix. I like the user interface of the newer one and have just upgraded my wireless router so it should connect better. Maybe in a few weeks it will get fixed as WD are very aware of this bug. As you use USB2 HDD's you will have no problems

The older model can be flashed with custom firmware which gives some interesting features, including a plugin allowing streaming from an E2 Dreambox which works well. Unfortunately will not work for newer models as WD started encrypting their firmware.

I had a further play around today with another 2 services on my WD Live box.

    Vudo ()
    Cinema Now ()

Both these services are pay as you use services, mainly for new release movies rentals but you can also buy titles. However, like Hulu Plus, their checking is a lot harder than that of Netflix and you will require a US credit card. But there are ways around this.

If you have a credit card (Australian) its easy to access them. Go to and sign up for a virtual credit card. In a nutshell, their service creates for you a virtual credit card, which is a card number, expiry date and CCV number. You simply add funds from your Australian credit card to it.

You do need a US address though, so go to Google and do a search for real estate in either Delware or Oregon (neither of these 2 states have sales tax.....why pay tax if you dont have to ? ). If you need a phone number (likely) use the real estate agents phone number from where you pinched the address from.

So just sign up to these services with your real name, your delaware or oregon address, the real estate agents phone number, and your new virtual credit card details. Keep a note of the address, phone number and zip code in case you want to sign up for any other USA services with your US credit card

You are now free to rent new release movies without getting out of your chair. Cut up your video store card. Happy viewing !

I should also note that you can also sign up to Hulu Plus with this method as well.

Thanks Sanity, I went and purchased a WD TV Live Media Player, GONG, wrong box, couldn't for the life of me work out how you got Netflix working so easy.
Took the box back to Dickie Smithies changed over to the WD TV Live "Streaming Media Player" and BINGO all is working fine and my wife thinks i am half decent again. Recommend this to members for movies etc

I also noticed that Officeworks have the WD Live box on sale for $99. Looking at the picture of it and the remote, it seems to be the older model that mandc is after.

I just used my Sony Bravia 40" LED/LCD TV to watch netflix with no problems, after a firmware update on the idjut box it worked fine without me telling it or anything else porkies about my location.
Maybe it's a deal they've worked out with Sony for the Bravia TV's or something.

There is no deal for Netflix in Australia with any manufacturer.

    Ah ok I see...

I have SportsDevilz and Live TV, I think Live Streams has some too... but from what I have found, mostly dead links. A lot of links to ABC/CBS/NBC etc, but they don't work, I gather because I am not appearing as being in the US.

I'm not sure what i'm doing wrong with unblock.us but have had no joy.
Ive tried manually adding dns details as well as running the easy setup for windows7.
Gave up on that and tried via router just put Primary DNS/Secondary DNS details in my billion 7404VNPX and still have no joy on the unblock.us site.
Keep getting "This device is not set up with our DNS" in the check service.

I have tried with unblock.us2.7 running and the net diagnostics say's "dns ok/transperant proxy" so it looks ok but no joy @ netflix website.
I did find on one of my many different attempts i could log in to netflix and browse movies but the moment i tried to view them i kicked me.
Is ther any ports that need forwarding to make this work ????
    Cheers

I have a 7404,go to unblock us and read general router settings and follow.
Should be 2 sets of numbers you enter possibly starting with the prefixes 149. and 199.
Go back to unblock us and there should be a separate series of numbers possibly starting with prefix 111. that have to be added to your box
Then do your upgrade, if done still should be there, remember one p/c has to be registered
