    Default Ademco alarm

    Hi Guys

I have an Ademco vist12a that has been installed for about 4 years. It has 3 hard wired optex RX-40QZ motion detector installed and has been faultless. Just recently it is getting a false alarm going off with Zone 1 coming up as activating it.

I have bypassed that zone on the key pad and it has been good for the last few days.
I have checked all the basics like connections, windows, bugs and all that is ok.

I am thinking of changing the detector.
What is involved with changing the detector?
With the alarm not armed will the alarm activate if I remove the wires and just install the new sensor?
I do realize that there is a + & - wire and they must not short together.
Do i have to power down the alarm to do this job?
Do I have to get the exact same model sensor?
I have read that some sensors have serial number that have to be programed into the key pad after installation.

Any help or info is appreciated.

    Cool

The optex PIRs are top notch & I'd be surprised if it was the detector at fault. I've only ever replaced three optex PIRs in 16 years. If you are a novice then I would be dropping all power off ( mains & battery) before you attempt to change it. If the PIR is hardwired then there are no programming changes ro be made. You can use any PIR but I'd be sticking with the optex.

Have you done any work around the detector in question recently (eg painted the wall)? If you have removed the detector cover for any reason, the tamper switch on the circuit board may not be sitting properly (if it is wired in, of course).

Yes, the Optex RX40QZ detectors are good, but they are only an "optical" quad (whatever that means), not a true 2-physical-sensing-element quad. For my money, the Bosch Gen2 quad detectors (which are true dual-element quad detectors) are the way to go. The best test of a good alarm sensor is to do a walk-test on a hot summer's day, and see how quickly and often it detects you.

The detector indicator light is now on permanently so I guess it is malfunctioning. I will replace it and see what happens. Thanks for the guys that replied to my questions.
