    Default DB9 to USB Converter

Have been trying to find the thread where someone had recommended DB9 to USB converters that actually work

Was wondering if anyone can name one that does

I know using some converters, Tecom System have been known to default there locations etc.

Require one for a newer laptop with no DB9 to program a range of panels

I tested about half a dozen converters and found that the one that worked without a hitch with all the panels and serial devices was the Belkin F5U109.

    Default Belkin F5U109

I use this converter on Tecom, Inner Range and NX panels. Never had a problem.

Got mine from CSD, its a little on the expensive side however, it has worked on everything that I have thrown at it!
-Nurse call, PABX, paging systems, loads of alarm panels, serial printers, fire panels... the list goes on.

There are also TX and RX LEDs, not many of the converters have this feature, I find it extremly helpful when troubleshooting comms issues.

I find that a rather strange comment. I have yet to come across a Serial to USB adaptor that doesnt work.

I may have needed to go off and find the drivers but in the end, all the ones I have used over the years have worked. Up to maybe 6 or more that I have experienced.

Thanks guys for your input appreciate your time & comments

Hi Porop we had a tech using a converter and whenever he got ouit of programming on a Tecom it lost all its users etc, we eventually found that was the cause, our older laptops with DB9s never had this problem just bad luck I guess, I dont think the drivers were ever looked at

Yeah I found the belkin one the best. It's what I use.
Do you need a driver for Windows 7?
I used the driver in the link below on my W7 64 bit system and works ok.

    Otherwise try one listed here

Not all chipsets are created equal.

Just been looking at the chipset in the USB to serial converter, it's made by FTDI.

Im assuming that this chipset would be used in lots of other converter on the market. Im sure Dick Smith wouldnt mind you pulling appart a USB-Serial just to check the chipset... give it a go!

I have never had any issues with FTDI, Philips or Prolific chipsets. It's the cheap brands that don't like to play ball with some of the legacy systems out there.
