care to share Z80 wouldnt mind a copy of this to have a play with
Got a mate to burn me a copy of the "Where is-14" Australian navigation data DVD from his company Fairlane.
It just works perfectly in the Mitsi 380 even though it is marked as FORD only.
Requires a dual layer DVD , that's the only tricky bit.
I am rapt, saved a shitload of cash and will continue to do so......

IF IT DONT WORK USE A BIGGER HAMMER
Just pm me your address and I'll send you a copy.
Better send me $5 for the disk and postage as well....
It's this one, but ver 14

I've got the Toyota v12 & v14 if anyone is interested, I only use a copy in my Prado and keep the original safe.
Hi my Prados just turned 4 and went to QLD two weeks ago and a lot of the streets in Noosa and Tawantin were vacant lots on the sat nav, so yes i would love an updated copy.
My email is surfroad3@bigpond.com
thanks
Dave
Does anyone know if the Toyota/Mitsubishi is VDO format?
Thanks.
PS. Wow - it's been ages since my last visit to austech...so much so that I've forgotten my password. I miss the time when it told you just how much time you've spent on the forums...

Mmmmm really must join the Sat Nav revolution... I'm afraid I just open a directory, look at where it is I am going, shut the map and drive there.
Then the Directory doubles as a make shift table for my passenger to roll a cigarette on.... Then it makes for a great tool to bash him about the head for smoking in my car.
It also works when I am stationary and I can even bring it inside to plan trips or a quick reference. It doesn’t need batteries either
Is there any reason why the in-car systems are so much more expensive than the portable ones?
I understand they have additional inputs from the ECU, speedometer and sensors etc., but it seems they generally have less POI, features, less easily customisable and possibly less raw computing power compared to the portable models. Not to mention, they're larger so the cost is unlikely to be due to the need for miniturisation.
Just trying to figure out what exactly it is that makes them cost 6+ times more (depending where you get it.) Anyone know?
Strange about the cost thing but i had a friend who had a full vdo install intergated with dvd and all the gagets and it still spun like a compas with a magnet next to it when in the city.
I like the eye level of my tomtom too i drive a vt commodore and having the nav down low where the radio sits would drive me nuts thats if i didnt hit you in the rear first trying to work out where i was.
The toyotas had a better hight with there navigator but 400 for map upgrades still sux
Here are some good reasons.
(a) the DVD Video player function.
(b) the MP3 player function.
(c) the bluetooth phone function.
(d) the music quietens when the mobile phone rings
(d) the music quietens when the GPS announces directions
(e) it has an external GPS aerial as standard
(f) it is much more difficult to steal
(g) it is intergrated with the ambient lighting in the car
(h) it integrates with steering wheel controls
(i) it has a reversing camera feature
(j) unit will keep accurately mapping when GPS signal lost due to inbuilt gyro etc.
(k) Ipod interface
if I still had my Tom Tom XL and had to purchase all those items seperately i would have a much less elegant solution.
For perhaps not that much less money.
I didn't want suction cups on my windscreen and wires all over the dash...
My unit is the Ecllipse AVN6000 (aka Fujitsu Ten)
.
Argh! Mine hardly has those features! Mine's a VDO Dayton that came factory with the car. I agree with point j - but apparently there are portable GPS now with gyros so that advantage is lessened (even with all the other additional inputs to help.) It has a CD (not DVD) drive, but I think the only thing I can put in there is the Nav disc.
I guess the only "features" I get are d), e), f), g), j). I didn't realise a GPS unit would necessarily come with a reversing camera feature. I'm also assuming that an external antenna gives better reception, right?
Not in the same league.
I guess eventually they will all have them, but for now it comes with my unit.
As for "lessened" i think it will be quite an increase in price for the "lessening"
well that is because yours is nowhere near the capability of mine...
Mine has a CD and a DVD optical drive.
As well as an Ipod interface...
They are pretty important to me.
But i also think that simply having features is not good enough, it's how they interact that is important.
then there is the issue of warranty and backup....mine has a 6 year warranty
well...that's because it is a complete car solution instead of a target at a certain function in the cabin, it does the lot.
A car manufacturer has all the hard work done for him without any issues of inter system incompatibility as well.
Absolutely correct.
Ask anyone with a Tom Tom what it is like in the CBD of Sydney..
Ii can tell you my tomtom gets lost in Melbourne cbd lol
thank god i know my city.
I still dont get why you have to pay 400 for a genuine map upgrade when with tomtom its only 150 i would love to compare the both go for a drive with tomtom and a vdo car system set the same address and see what they both do.
