Default Do Telsta change Settings in your Bigpond Modem from their end?

I have a Technicolor TG587n v3, (BigPond Home Premium Gateway)

I've had it about a month now,

I took screenshots of the Modem settings after the Internet was up and running,

yesterday I took a look at the settings again & found that the Default Gateway, & Primary DNS & Secondary DNS had been changed from my original settings

    Was:

    Gateway: xxx.xx.209.11
    Primary DNS: xx.x.195.193
    Secondary DNS: xx.x.133.193

    Now:

    Gateway: xxx.xx.208.3
    Primary DNS: xx.x.194.49
    Secondary DNS: xx.x.207.1

I did not change these myself...... just wondering why the settings changed ?

    Cheers

I would be very surprised if they could not contact 'ET' as required.
I know with my now defunct SkyMesh Satellite internet, they could alter what 'Beam' I was receiving and the transmitter power but oddly not the receiver's as I had to manually add an attenuator at one time.
Even with ADSL, doesnt each computer you add get its own individual number as well while its connected to the Internet?
I stand unequivicably behind everything I say , I just dont ever remember saying it !!

Those settings will change as the ISP , Telstra in this case, shuffles around their network They are assigned dynamically.
Likely happens to a lot of people, but they just don't notice.
From your internal perspective as far as your PC's and other devices are concerned, nothing has changed. Same default gateway, same DNS.
I'd rather have a bottle in front of me than a frontal lobotomy...

I am sure with Dialup, you had a number given you by the server and each time you logged in, you were then given a second number just for that session only.
quite some years ago on dialup I set up a 'Voice Call' with a chatter overseas and so he could link to me, I had to obtain this 2nd number but because he was on 'Broadband', his number didnt change as you dont logoff as you do with Dialup.

They use dynamic address so yes they can change from time to time as telstra changes it's network

    Thankyou,

This is what I suspected....to myself, that it is somehow changed by the ISP,

using a Telstra Bigpond Modem does not provide any easy menus to change the Primary DNS & Secondary DNS.....(basically designed this way by the ISP, not to be allowed)

but, I have found that you can change the Primary DNS & the Secondary DNS using the Windows Command Prompt (& Telnet commands)

I now wonder has Telstra Bigpond got a Default Primary DNS setting, & a Default Secondary DNS if you were setting up a non Telstra Modem router with all the settings

    I found this

    thanks for the reply's

    cheers

    Hi Osirus

Bigpond have full control of your routers firmware via TFTP. hell they can even update and then reboot for you
If you log outgoing traffic you will see it calling home to check for settings update such as DNS. They don't advise you that they can change all of your setting remotely

    Cheers

    Thanks Extradry

seems to be about once a month (ATM)......they do this....& I am just keeping an eye on it at the moment

What about If I bought a Non Telstra Adsl2+ Modem....(one I could have easier access to ALL the settings too....)

would this solve my problem of them doing things to my modem....?

I have also looked into un-locking the Telstra Modem.... & set up myself as another user...?

Also I read they might have something like "intrusion detection" setup

(Then the question is which is the best ADSL2+ modem to replace it with......?)

    cheers

    No Drama's OSirus

Better of bying a billion 7800N, excellent router. You control your settings, Ready for NBN, Great wireless B,G & N, Gigabit ethernet ports etc. Make sure you get the N model.

Have a drive of the interface here (to see if you like it)

The telstra router are a POS and i don't like them having access when the feel like it . (I am not an employee or reseller of billion just love their 7800N)

    Cheers

    I recently bought the

It gets the same 4 and a half star rating from Cnet's review and has dual 5 gig and 2.4 gig channels and a USB ports which you can share a USB drive on which the Billion doesnt have.

Either way, both are much better than a hobbled telstra modem
