Problem connecting PND to PC

I’ve got myself in a mess and lost communications between my desktop computer with Windows 7 and my PND with CE6.
What used to happen was: I connect PND via USB, there is a ‘bong’, Windows Mobile Device Centre starts and we are connected.
Then I must have pressed something that I should not have pressed.
Now what happens is: I plug in the USB connections, I get a ‘bong’ Windows Mobile temporarily says ‘connecting’ then ‘not connected'.
If I go direct into CE6 everything ‘looks’ in order. The USB Status says connected and the PC Connection Properties has the Allow with desktop computer when device is attached box is ticked.
Any help will be much appreciated.

Every few months I have the same problem. Never could get out the reason why. But always could solve the problem this way:

On mobile device device manually run \Windows\repllog.exe - even it seems nothing happens
Connect mobile device and desktop!!!
Shutdown both devices
Now several times power on/restart desktop and/or mobile device - always leaving on device powered on. Alternating.

Perhaps it takes 10 tries...
