Hey, I want to build an old school gaming rig with Windows 98 installed on it (laugh if you want, haha) And I realize that it's no longer supported by microsoft, but where can I get the most updates that were released for Windows 98, and also, what is the most decent hardware configuration that supports it?

In hindsight I should have posted my Facebook status as: "I've blown the head gasket on my 1997 XR3i" rather than "I've just buggered a 14 year old escort".
The police still haven't seen the funny side, my lap top's been confiscated and the wife has gone off to her mum's.
There is no need for updates and you don't need to go online if it is for old school games.
I tried once to install 98 but it wouldn't accept the hard drive. I don't know the limitations and why exactly but I can run Win98 very nicely on Virtual box under Linux. This was for one of my sons because he wanted to play Simant.
There were a lot of pretty cool games back then that were nice for all ages.
Update: A deletion of features that work well and ain't broke but are deemed outdated in order to add things that are up to date and broken.
Compatibility: A word soon to be deleted from our dictionaries as it is outdated.

Win 98 could only address HDDs of a certain size, can't recall how big, now, because of the limitations of the 32 bit (or was it only 16 bit) architecture. RAM, too may have been an issue, 512Mb may have been a limit there, too. A virtual box is a great suggestion for later hardware.

Out of curiosity, why would you want to use Windows 98 rather than Windows 2000 or XP for a gaming rig?

I currently have 16GB worth of old games on Windows 98 VM's (yes, multiple)
all are running through Hyper-V
Windows 98 has got a 64gb PARTITION limit, however, with an update to fDisk or the last version of 98 it lifts to 127GB
i vaguely remember doing something like fdisk, then d:setup.exe or whatever to get that 98 disk working
i never did really get dos, i always forgot the commands

In regards to updates, Your only option would be to download a "User ISO" from channel BT that included Windows 98 with the latest patches that where available... All the websites that I knew of that had the updates available are long gone...
personally I wouldn't risk it even a up to date windows 98 machine is like 100grand in cash surrounded by a barbwire fence for security. I seem to recall some of the known hackers hacking it in under 2 mins.
