Hey Tiny - I'll put together the bits list, prices and where I got them from later tonight and and post up the results too

What cracks me up is that when I was in high school (~30 years ago) I drew up quite a few designs for quad copters.
The designs were for whipper snipper and lawnmower engines. If you'd suggested you could use an electric motor in a plane in the 1980's you could kill several people as they laughed themselves to death.
It's rather amusing thinking about my old designs and how similar they are to modern quad copters. But for all the thought I put into my designs using petrol or glow plug motors, I never expected to see one fly.
Then again, I wasn't sure I'd ever see colour LCD, or hand held lasers or terrabit disk drives.

ok,
bought this frame -
got the naze32 -
ordered this pack –
Bolt has a prop pack – got that too
you also need a Fatshark 600mW transmitter (or equivalent) – for the FPV camera
got the lipo’s from hobbyking, and purchased a Frsky & receiver from BoltRc
Going to make the leds on the back
will post some photos as the stuff comes in and I start putting them together

Hey guys, bits have turned up - the GoPro is just a reference for size, still missing some stuff but BoltRc have come good

just got 2 x - just in case of crash
so can tell you in 10 days the quality - might be a cheaper alternative

Will be interesting to see if those replacement frames are carbon fibre or just carbon fibre look/imitation.

The description reads the same as the ones I started today 1.5mm fuselage with 3mm arms and the word carbon fiber is all over it

One of the fellas at the 2015 Southern 80 put this nice piece together.
These drones are everywhere now, i watched a guy practice with a Phantom this morning at the beach.
If u want to go on an expedition get a Land Rover, if u want to come home from an expedition get a Landcruiser!
check out this one
the poster isn't the pilot - but this sort of stuff is what causes problems
edit...... my 250 mini's - have bought some transmitters and waiting for them to turn up.....

Somebody needs to about clearances.
I used to think paraglider pilots were the volvo drivers of the sky, but now I know it's quad pilots
I can't wait for flying cars to replace them

Yep there is accidents, idiots & stupid. There is no cure for stupid.
Then there is gektor; he can fly a Multi Rotor
He can also make mistakes, we're all capable of them.

have i shown you this?

LOL, imagine being a real helicopter pilot & ascending thru the clouds to see a drone in your face.
Makes me wonder though with all the multirotors flying around with cameras that they haven't recorded any footage of ET UFO's.
Now the following is disappointing, trash you didn't win.
Actually it is quite amazing what this thing can do.
Crash-proof 'drone in a cage' flies away with $1 million prize
Gimball is described as the first "collision-tolerant drone," utilizing a rotating spherical outer cage that means it can be used safely in close proximity with people. Designed to enter hostile environments -- such as burning buildings and radioactive sites -- Gimball maps its surroundings and can roll across ceilings and floors, navigating restricted areas, and transmit RGB and infrared images back to disaster relief services.
Unlike other rescue robots, where colliding with obstacles could spell the end of an expedition, Gimball is able to bounce back without losing its bearings or damaging its in-built camera.

It's quite interesting seeing him do the flight above the clouds and how that would apply to the rules here in Australia.
It's normally assumed that if you're flying RC you can see the model and you're default VFR. So just keeping clear of controlled airspace and people on the ground is pretty much all there is to it.
For FPV, it's a bit more complex. You're still flying VFR. You have to be able to see where you're going, but other aircraft can't see you all that well.
Add on top of this because there is no risk to the pilots life, he can safely (to himself) fly his aircraft on GPS (IFR) and not worry about kissing the dirt.
If starts to get a bit more tricky.
The most obvious thing about RC and FPV is to keep them out of class A airspace, actually, keep them out of A,B & C airspace. Basically any controlled airspace is a no go.
I would expect CASA is going to make an example of the first idiot who does actually do something stupid in that airspace and rightly so.
I think of replicating that flight in suburban Sydney. Parramatta is a great example.
The airspace there I can describe. From 0 to 300ft is airspace for kites, RC planes. 300ft to 1500ft is where we would slot in ultralights, but flying them over densely populated area like that just isn't safe or practical. General Aviation shouldn't be below 1500ft because they won't have enough time to react in order to get to the ground. So 300-1500ft acts as a good buffer zone. There's enough space in there for FPV below 500 and GA above 1000ft. I can't remember the exact flight level, but it's probably about 4500ft. So 1500-4500ft forms a lane way north south for GA aircraft to fly in and out of Bankstown Sydney to the north. So flying an unmanned aircraft about 1500ft should get you a kick up the arse.
Above 4500ft is class A/B controlled airspace for Mascot Sydney. Flying anything above 4500ft should get you arse transplanted to Silverwater. It's common for heavy aircraft to be on the downwind leg at about 6000ft over Parramatta and climbing out to the Northwest through 10000ft.
The current rules cater quite well for RC aircraft, even FPV.
So if the public can fly responsibly and stay away from controlled airspace (CTA's) and out of specific airspace like laneways, then CASA won't need to make special rules other than to cater to the needs of FPV etc.
Assuming our friend with the hexacopter isn't in any controlled airspace, under Australian rules we might consider him to be above 300ft, but that doesn't pose any safety issues.
Flying in clouds, he should maintain a separation from them. So flying through clouds should be avoided. He shouldn't be flying above the clouds, but it is accepted that if you can see the ground then this isn't really a problem if you can maintain separation from them.
The chances of a small RC planing colliding with anything are remote and if they have a weight restriction, like balloons, if there is a collision it will be minor to a larger aircraft.
A strobe light on femto aircraft with a specific pattern like a double flash would be something I'd consider for FPV flying.
It also brings into question night flying. I do not think there is any provision for ultralight or RC night flying in Australia.
It has been assumed under VFR rules that if you can't see the ground, you can't land. When flying VFR, you're always aware how quickly it gets dark on the ground.
Likewise if you can't see the RC plane, then you can't fly it.
I'm currently grounded at the moment. I no longer trust my radio and I'm looking for a new DSM2 Spektrum radio if anybody can recommend one.

the tale of 3 frames..........
as you all know I am slowly building 3 250mm racing drones - I am just waiting for 2 frskys and receivers so I can finish them off
I have flashed a couple of naze32 aero's and bought 3 frames to put together, I have all the bits and plan to have them done very shortly
The 3 frames.....
I have one (pre released) from , one from and one from
so...... what do I think
BoltRc.com
very sturdy - it comes with 3mm spacers to tie the whole thing together (the 2 bottom plates connect to the top plate via the rods). 3 mm carbon fibre arms with 1.5mm carbon fibre body and looks good - 144.4 grams
Nextfpv.com.au
again sturdy - missing the spacers so the 2 bottom plates aren't solid and there is a little flex - profile is a little higher - 145.8 grams
eBay
Well - they claim it is carbon fibre - I'm sure it is a thin layer of carbon fibre sheet with epoxy resign and is obvious with the weight difference - 131.7 grams
sooooo - not too sure what would happen if they hit a brick wall doing 60km/h
as for full carbon fibre frame - looks like the BoltRc might be the better, lets see when they are flying

Mate, freakee has kids to help him wreck his aircraft, as for me I have 2, the little Hubsan X4 I crashed a few times, the big Tali H500 I have had some lucky close calls until yesterday when I clipped a tree at 10m & it flew like a brick into the ground.
Nothing money can't fix, ordered a new body shell, until then I fixed it up with some plastic glue & its almost as good as new.
It seems that the odd crash or heavy landing is part of the hobby now as it was back 40 years ago when I started flying RC.
