Default DVD to AVI (or similar)

What is the software of choice these days for converting a stock standard, store bought DVD to AVI or similar
    Thanks
In hindsight I should have posted my Facebook status as: "I've blown the head gasket on my 1997 XR3i" rather than "I've just buggered a 14 year old escort".
The police still haven't seen the funny side, my lap top's been confiscated and the wife has gone off to her mum's.

Handbrake will have trouble with original discs due to security measures on the disc.

    fuuny hey
we used to turn svcd's into dvd (much hassle)
then we rip dvd to avi to save space
now we just watch them off a usb or hdd media player
