phil, win 8 is no different to any other version to install.
Maybe you interrupted it while it was searching for updates when you started hacking it.

When you hacked it, it probably started to protect itself from you??
Wouldn't want an OS to protect itself, that's what virus checkers are for right.

Basically did the same last month when I got my Win8 x64 laptop. No issues ... Windows 8 is really great, in between I love it.

    What I did:

    1. Ran Windows Update (1.5 hrs)
    2. Downloaded and installed "Absolute Uninstaller" (5 mins)
    3. Uninstalled all bloat ware with "Absolute Uninstaller" (0.5 hrs)
    4. Modified "Start Screen" according to my needs (0.75 hrs)
    5. Added "Power Buttons Suite" to Start Screen (0.25 hrs)
    6. Installed all my favorite apps as I used them before on my Vista computer (4 hrs)
    7. Downloaded and installed "Start Menu Modifier", so Metro apps can be run windowed (15 mins)
    8. Created a resource DLL which holds 675+ Metro style icons (13 hrs)
    9. From this DLL I then took the icons for the "Desktop Screen" so they all now are in true Metro style, too (0.5 hrs)

    What I NOT did:

Add a Start Button functionality, this because for me Win+X - and the Charm Bar, of course - is enough
