Noticed, when Windows 8.1 Update 1 took place today morning, that nearly the same amount of bytes received also were sent, alternately.
IP-addresses used:
178.255.87.14 traffic-direction: in/out, location: UNITED KINGDOM, owner: BRADFORD COLO
199.55.201.27 traffic-direction: in, location: USA, owner COMODO GROUP
Indicates, the update-process didn't (temporarily) disable PC's firewall, and, that I've a well working Internet Security Suite running. Drawback: Internet traffic took twice the amount, so update-process took over 3 hours.
EDIT:
This update — let’s call it Windows 8.1.1 does NOT automatically install the Windows 8.1 feature packs KB2919355, KB2938439 and KB2937592. You must download and install them manually.

The Windows 8.1 update 1 is a mandatory update: who does not switch to the new version, will not get on the next patch day (May 13, 2014) a further update for Windows 8.1.

Ohhh wow, that red text colour makes it scary doesn't it.
Well don't be too concerned Windows 8.0 users.
If your a Windows 8.0 user (and believe me there are reasons to stay on 8) you need not panic, Windows 8.0 will be supported until January 12, 2016.
But, just in case, Windows 8.0 users are interested in getting this new update, they have to first upgrade to Windows 8.1 and then should get the new Update, it is a two-step upgrade, this it is only mandatory if you have already gone to 8.1.
Ohhh and that's the other thing, I don't know how anally retentive and bogged down with security issues all other PC's out there are, but I combined the Update 1 download with 6 others that were waiting, for a total of 960mb - it took all of 20 mins to download install and reboot.
In hindsight I should have posted my Facebook status as: "I've blown the head gasket on my 1997 XR3i" rather than "I've just buggered a 14 year old escort".
The police still haven't seen the funny side, my lap top's been confiscated and the wife has gone off to her mum's.

The Update 1 for Windows 8.1 and associated improvements especially for mouse and keyboard might have users made curious.
Now, you should know, that you can try Windows 8.1.1 free-of-charge. The 90-day trial of Windows 8.1 Enterprise has already been updated and is available free for downloading. Three months should be sufficient to make it is a picture of whether you will find joy in Windows 8.1 now.
However, you must take into account one important thing: the enterprise trial version can not convert into a full version. You should consider this before one is really comfortable there in the lab.

I tried the update but when I run the first part, KB2919442, I get a message saying "This update is not applicable to your computer".
I'm running 8.1 64 bit.

Dave001, you are right, I had downloaded the X86 version.
I did a search on the Microsoft website with the file descriptor you supplied but it found no result.
Can you give me a link?
Thanks

For me updated the same day it was released. I must say that it was huge and had to wait for a long time for it to finish.

Well when I first read this I thought; what about the average PC user who just lets Windoze update itself when it's ready??
Not all people read this or other forums on the chance of finding an update for their PC.
So I have waited to see what windows would do.
As I suspected that if it is a "mandatory" update then it will be installed, if it is optional like the update from W8 to W8.1 then it will be offered & in that case i chose to install, I didn't have to look for it.
Just checked update history, & it has installed update last week & the Windows 8.1 feature pack KB2919355 4 days ago, all without me going to a web site to work out which one is right for my version.
So now Windows has added a green "Store" icon to my task bar that I didn't ask for?? Lucky I can unpin it.
Cheers, Tiny

This may come in handy for those of you who are not sure if windows 8.1 update has been installed.
Interesting to read the new features link below, I hadn't even noticed the changes, however they are there.
"Windows 8.1 Update and Windows RT 8.1 Update are updates to Windows 8.1 and Windows RT 8.1 that include new and changed features to help you get the best out of your PC. To see what’s included in these updates, see
To check if you have Windows 8.1 Update or Windows RT 8.1 Update, check your Start screen. If you see a search button next to your account picture in the upper-right corner, you are running Windows 8.1 Update or Windows RT 8.1 Update."

Edit: It maybe a coincidence, however just lately my PC sometimes turns itself back on 15 seconds after I shut it down. I actually have to pull the plug to stop it restarting itself, even though my settings show that the power button shuts down the PC. Also at this time selecting shut down from the menu causes a restart as well, not every time just sometimes. I've been blaming it on Windows Updates, as there always seems to be a new update just installed when this happens?
Could this be a little bug/conflict that W8.1 update has with my hardware or (bios)??

Yup nothing like Microsoft trying to get it right at the expense/confusion/participation of the end user.
Ya think with a few more updates and version releases and patches they might have it right by 2016? I mean really what are they paying the developers to do in the YEARS prior to release? Must be some party going on during development, cause bug testing and practicality and end-user friendliness/compatibility is decided/determined/deduced (and seems to be taken into account) after the release and purchase by the end user!
Anybody here use Linux? I don't think they beta test with pre-paid end-users do they?
It's well known that Windows 8.x by default does NOT really shutdown the PC even you select Shutdown from the power menu. To reach a true shutdown, you have to create your own desktop link (name it "Full Shutdown") to a .CMD file with contents as following
Code:shutdown.exe /s /t 03

If it doesn't completely shutdown then it must hibernate or sleep.
Yes I understand that W8 gets ready for a fast startup by hibernating essential startup operations & I want it to do so, however it does shut down any open programs & therefor is not hibernating or sleep mode.
Since it gets turned off at the power point when not in use, then it cant use any power. That is why I use shutdown.
The fact that it turns itself back on just before I turn the power point off, as if I have pressed the power button is not normal!!
I would expect it to restart if that is what I selected, however I did not.

If you want to use the power button in order to achieve a true shutdown of your PC, instead of using the Charm bar, then might be helpful.
BTW: The oddity you reported never arose on my Windows 8.1.1 laptop. Also wasn't the case with Windows 8.0/8.1.
