    Default Broadband usage ??

I have a client who is on a 20Gb per mth Internet package
He mentioned today that he felt that since upgrading to Windows 8.0 that he is using his download allowance far faster than when he used Windows 7
Now I'm aware that there are a number of different variables involved but is there any possibility that Windows 8 in its basic format would access the internet any more than a similar setup in Windows 7??

I must admit, it's something I have never thought about in the past.
    Thanks
In hindsight I should have posted my Facebook status as: "I've blown the head gasket on my 1997 XR3i" rather than "I've just buggered a 14 year old escort".
The police still haven't seen the funny side, my lap top's been confiscated and the wife has gone off to her mum's.

I have a 10Gb/Month Data allowance & rarely use half of it.

OS is now W8.1(update) was W8.1 & W8.0 before latest updates.
I doubt Windows updates would use his data allowance up, although the W8.1 OS update is substantial; it doesn't occur every month, most security updates are in the 10-100Mb range & driver updates are in the 100-300Mb range & don't occur that often.

Maybe your client uses up his data allowance watching HD videos or streaming movies/TV shows??
    Cheers, Tiny

He would need more than 20 gig a month to do that very often. My household burns through around 300 gig a month, almost all is Netflix etc streaming. Prior to that, I used to use bugger all

MTV is correct, the only thing that could possibly make it go through more is updates. Its also worth noting, new operating system, new features, new updates. This person could log his data if he thinks there is a problem, unsecured wifi could be another.

I hear similar claims occasionally that 4G uses more data because its faster. It doesnt use anymore data than 3G, you just simply get what you are downloading much quicker.

Microsoft introduced long times ago so-called Patch Tuesday. It's the day each month Microsoft releases security and other patches for their operating systems and other software. Patch Tuesday is always the second Tuesday of each month.

The most recent Patch Tuesday was on April 8, 2014, the next Patch Tuesday is scheduled for May 13, 2014.

Patch Tuesday doesn't download a whole operating system upgrade every month like has just been rolled out. It downloads as you say; security patches which do occur at least once a month.

As admin has suggested, "unsecured wifi" may be the issue. Someone hijacking his data usage.
If not it is his personal usage.

I still can't see it being updates as I have 2 people on 2 Microsoft computers using less than 5 Gb/per month combined, both with Microsoft office which does update fairly regularly. Wife does Facebook, I do Austech & a couple of other forums, we both get emails with attachments (small & large) & both watch the odd YouTube in HD.

    Even if I had 4 PC's with W8 I wouldn't go over 20Gb.
So the OP's client must have lots of PC's &/or he is getting special updates from Microsoft that I dont get.
If he is running a business with multiple PC's then 20Gb would be the wrong data allowance plan to be on.

    Just my opinion I guess.
    Cheers, Tiny

    Thanks guys,
I'm always gob smacked by those who start with one story (Post 1) and then when you contact them and advise some knowledgeable technical experts have suggested XYZ they then come to light with ALL the shit they didn't tell you in the first place.
He initially told me that he wasn't a downloader, at best he might download 2 movies a month.
I went over to his place tonight (I built the system) and just wanted to be sure that everything I did was kosher - so to speak.
I built the unit only 2 months ago
I found over 60 movies on his system - a full torrents DL system installed (Ohhh my daughter must have done that says my client) all downloaded in the last 2 months

I like the slinkies analogy . I set up older computers for people and not for profit organisations, so am often downloading drivers/updates, patches etc. even the odd mfgs OEM disks and rarely use more than 100gb a month. There is even the odd movie/tv series thrown into that mix and wife uses live streaming for some of her favourite TV stuff.
edit: not to mention two adults (son and wife) using smart phones and on line content, for a good part of the day and two grandchildren (7 and 11) also, so my usage should be "up there".
