    Default Installing a immobilise switch to a car

    I have been asked to install a hidden switch to a car which will immobilise it. I thought about installing a switch where the starter wire comes off the ignition barrel. Can someone tell me if a switch rated at 20A would do as sometimes the starter wire coming from the ignition barrel can be quite heavy indicating a high current. If someone has a better idea where to put one please reply.

    Some theives come equiped with their own ignition barrel, unplug yours and plug theirs straight in,
    Others know how to tap into your fuse box for power and the wires necessary to bypass everything.

    Id recomend putting a kill switch on the electric fuel pump/s.
    That should really have them scratching their heads.

    Even if they jerryied but couldnt find the switch they would have to run a wire from the boot to + to fire her up.

    Maybe 2 switches, one in the boot and one hidden in the car.
    Use the boot one for extra security.

    or take the positive that goes to the coil and put a switch in that

    A couple of friendly pit bull dogs left inside the car might offer some protection.

    My first car was a VC commodore, always had a problem of going missing, mainly from drunks needing to get home from the local pub. Luckily at the time I was studying electronics in TAFE.

    This was my solution.

    Timer relay, reverse gear select switch and hidden kill switch wired to the ignition.

    You had to jump in the car, turn the "reds on" pop it in reverse then back into park, hit the kill switch within 5 secs before it times out then she starts.

    Ever since i'd get phone calls at 3am from the local cops telling me I need to pick up my car from the bottom of the street.

    what model car? I had one with a fuel solenoid as used in lpg setups with a switch in the power wire from the ign switch to the solenoid. another I had another wire coming out of the dizzy switching the points to earth. If its some thing like a vn dunny then tap into the existing imobiliser cct.

    Its for a late model suzuki 4x4 not to sure on exact model yet. Is more to stop other family members than thieves. Ha ha

    Jaycar sell a combination lock kit using a keypad. I built one, fitted it to my Toyota Supra and wired the output of it to the run inhibit of the ECU. All wiring was concealed and impossible to get to without a great deal of time trying to trace it.
    If the ECU doesn't get the right signals it simply won't start.

    Easy to operate. Jump in the car, turn the key to ON, punch in the 4 digit code and the engine will start. No code, and you could wind the starter until the battery went flat and it still wouldn't start.

    A kill switch is cheaper - but it is easier to find. The other benefit with this keypad idea is if you hit the # key and hold it down, the engine dies and won't start unless you enter the 4 digit number. Good if you are being hijacked. Jump out of the car and walk away - leave the thieves to it. They won't be going anywhere.

    Timed kill switches are very effective. Car stops 50 meters from where it is started. Usually in the middle of the street. Not the preferred place to be trying to re-route and kill system.

    What ever you do, DO NOT kill the ignition (sparkplugs firing) as it will pump unburnt fuel into your exhaust and the bye bye cat converter.

    Kill the fuel supply mate.

    Killing the ignition is for older pre cat cars.
