I originally plugged it in to my monitor and it didnt work.

Since then, I borrowed a laptop of the exact same model and did a hard drive swap so I could upload my sons important stuff to Google Drive.

My son was playing around with it last night and plugged it in to his external monitor and it very surprisingly came to life.

It would seem he has had it in his backpack and someone has put a leaking can of drink in there, though I cant see evidence of liquid on it. I will just let him keep using it with the external monitor and keep checking it occasionally to see if the screen starts working.

my point was if it has dry solder joints on the vga part of the board (common problem as stated)
heating the sucker up, well im sure you guys know solder

i never got over the day i wrapped a seeming dead lappy in a towel & it worked 20 mins later (for a bit)

    Just for the record

My son has been like a dog with a bone on this and would not give up. He hasnt worked on a computer before but did a bit of Googling and Youtubeing and pulled the screen apart and found the monitor cable had for some reason come loose inside. He plugged it back in and its back to good as new.

How a leaking can of drink wasnt the cause I dont know but I am glad I am not paying for a new laptop

    A good outcome.

Didn't cost you financially and your son has now learnt a bit about computers.

Good that you're happy about it & not pissed off because you didn't find the loose connection.
    Cheers, Tiny

At the moment, personally, I cant physically dismantle it to look for issues. I told him that its his choice if he wants to open it and if he cant put it back together its his problem. Maybe in a few days when I am more capable, he didnt want to wait. He didnt have much to lose by having a go and plenty to gain.
