There are dozens of editing programs out there, its all E2 based.

    I use iDreamX

    Does everything.
I want to get a head start on learning but I can see your point on asking the important questions like "do you need to change the bootloader if upgrading to the BH image" Before I get the box.

Yes I have watched a few Youtube video's and its easier than the old serial days using DreamUp V2.14 upgrading the image on the old DM7000

the Vu's are the easiest boxes to flash
just pop an usb stick with the firmware in the usb slot, reboot and it basically takes care of itself
the old days removing the box from your lounge and taking it into your office to flash via serial port are over
as for editors like oceanboy said , there are heaps out there
anything that works on dreamboxes will work on these
alternatively if you Google Vu tools you will find a plethora of proggies all in one

Vu duo2 with factory image are they E1 or E2. If factory image is E1 when you change to BH image no doubt you have to change the bootloader is this correct. Is the bootloader the only thing you have to change before installing a BH image.

The Vu Duo and the Vu Duo2 are both E2 boxes
E1 is for older boxes like the DM500
    Found this explanation elsewhere>
The most striking difference between the two Enigmas is that Enigma 1 is a C++ application through-and-through whereas Enigma 2 only has a relatively compact C++ core for the lower level stuff and handles much of its internal logic in Python. For instance, in Enigma 2, the user interface logic and menu structures are all handled by Python modules and they could be completely rewritten by merely altering the Python code. In Enigma 1, similar changes would require altering the C++ code and recompiling the binary. In addition to that, Enigma 2 also includes a new plugin interface that allows writing plugins as Python modules. The old Enigma 1 only allowed binary plugins.
As for your bootloader, pretty sure you won't need to change your bootloader to install BlackHole

Have not read it yet. I'm getting all my odd jobs out of the way and next Monday I'll start reading all that is relevant for the duo2 project and once I get the box if stuck I will ask you guys for help. I have to do some slight electrical mods to move the DM7000 out of the way, move the AZBox, and other. Actually I took a pic of one of my 2 cabinets that live either side of our Hecto.

    Everything I do is EXTREME.
The Right Hand cabinet is all for Satellite
The big bunch of Co-ax's head to the dish farm, the two heading through the wall are off to the puter room.

Yes and my other cabinet on the left hand side (not pictured) is identical in size to this one (pictured) but has 25% Sat and 75% stuff for Movies.

Had a 30 min read of the black and white manual (Pics are poor) but the DISEqC setup reminds me of the DM7000. I didn't find anything about what Enigma the factory duo2 uses but you guys have educated me for that.

Updating the boot loader is the same as loading a new image. The new boot loader is just another file on the USB stick and will come as part of the new image. You won't even be aware that it has changed.

The manual actually doesn't tell you to much and the black and white pics are hard to read (a least the copy I got) The more I read and find out now the better and easier it will be for me.
