[Windows 7] Replacing the Explorer Shell by Cairo Shell
It's well known in Windows 7 you easily can replace the default Windows Explorer shell with a different shell of your choice.
John Average mainly uses its desktop PC / laptop to browse the Internet, send / receive eMails, do some text processing, view photos and from time to time play a game. A friend, who can be considered to be a John-Average-type user, asked me whether it's possible to replace in Windows 7 the default shell by another, more intuitive shell. I recommended him to use the "Cairo Desktop Environment" because with the "Cairo Multi-Desktop", one can add up to 16 virtual desktop areas to spread one's work - or play - around without becoming cluttered or unorganized ( Easily switch between desktops with mouse gestures or keyboard shortcuts). He agreed. Hence I installed on his Windows 7 laptop the "Cairo Desktop Environment", which requires .NET 3.5 or higher to be present on the computer, so it's irrelevant whether installed Windows 7 is 32-Bit or 64-Bit version.
All I had to do was
1. (it's free of charge !!!) and entirely move it's unzipped content "Cairo_Latest_160410" into C:\ drive
2. Open Registry Editor and locate the following registry entry:
Key: HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon
Name: Shell
Type: REG_SZ
Value: Explorer.exe
3. Replace actual content of "Value" with
C:\Cairo_Latest_160410\Release\CairoDesktop.exe
4. Re-start Windows 7
My friend was impressed of this new shell, is very happy with it.
