Hollywood studios haven't been able to stop it, don't like his chances
I have a good mate who is a Videographer.
He works pretty exclusively in the Dance school Dance competition industries.
He was explaining to me what, as a small business he has to do;
Travels to theatre... sets up... films the concert... edits the concert.. burns it to DVD... Creates the covers.. and ships to relevant Dance schools ... This part is all done for FREE
Yes agreed, all in a day work... but he/they are then relying on the customer to order the product at perhaps $30.00 per unit and instead of the usual 30 or 40 orders per 100 concert attendees... they are now only getting perhaps 20..
Five years ago they used to 80 per 100 - today it's 20 (at best)
why??
The customers make a deal with the best friend or other attendees and they go halves in purchasing just one copy... they then pirate a copy.. ...
Is there a way my mate can protect the product he is manufacturing??
Sorry, I should have said also, he is DUPLICATING his disc's, not REPLICATING

In hindsight I should have posted my Facebook status as: "I've blown the head gasket on my 1997 XR3i" rather than "I've just buggered a 14 year old escort".
The police still haven't seen the funny side, my lap top's been confiscated and the wife has gone off to her mum's.

Yeah, I know mate but he's a small business and I don't to see him go under.
I suggest he use DL Discs, I mean if Joe Smuck(not a computer geek) puts a 4 hour disc into their PC and tries to copy it to a standard 2 hour DVD, it won't work.
If they have dual layer support, they have to be willing to go buy dual layer blanks.($$$) Just a way to combat part of the problem.
I don't think there isn't a way to defeat somebody with above normal computer expertise.
So... back to square one I guess.
Price your product and professionally package it so they are willing to order it from you.

I really doubt that he is loosing 60% to piracy, more then likely the majority are recording these things on their phone/video camera.
He has an outdated business model, sure 10 years ago, a lot of people had no choice but to pay him $30 for the DVD, they didn't own the hardware to do it themselves, these days, they have a device in there pocket that can capture it all in excellent quality, then upload it to their Facebook/Twitter account with a single click of a button, for all their family/friends to see, and all for free.

I can remember years ago when disc trading was big here that if you hit cancel during the lead out process (right at the end) while disc burning, that the disc would work fine, but couldnt be copied.
One member here did it on his discs and other traders were furious.

Rip to hard drive, burn to single layer disc, this resize option is the default on most ripping programs, too easy
Good point raised though that its not just ease of copying, the model has changed since most people have HD recording capability built into their phones these days

As I said, the industry is the dance and dance competition industry - because children are involved security is incredibly strict, focused and although I say I myself almost bordering on invasion of personal space. If anyone is ever suspected of surreptitiously videoing a performance they have their entrance fee returned and they are escorted from the facility - there are no second chances - and usually very limited questions - It's show me your bag or get out - they are not asked twice
There is no recording inside the theatre at any competition I've ever been involved in, that's not to say it doesn't happen _ I've just never seen a pirated copy obtained in the manner that you describe.

Yep, for you and I - too easy but thankfully not all PC users have these skill levels.
Christ, I deal with this on a daily basis.
Just today, I had a computer user ring me who had transferred from one of our sites to another. At the original site we use HP laptops, at the second site we use Dell's.
She rang to ask me where the On/Off button on the new laptops was ?? - I Joke not.
This user had been with our organisation for 12 years
cheers

Just an idea; what about, since technology is heading the way of Flash/SD cards, he sells his work on USB sticks or just Micro SD cards with his video or pics in files that he makes read only & password protect the file or card against copying??
That's what the GPS map distributers are doing with map files on SD/Micro SD cards.
Very hard to crack the encryption for copying.
Until some 14 year old writes a program to do it.
Cheers, Tiny

Nice one Tiny - thanks

Good thinking, Tiny. However, I doubt it would prevent the making of an image of the whole drive or card using something like the Linux dd command.
Unfortunately for Seymour's friend I just can't see any reasonable method of copy protection. I also know a lot of parents regard the whole practice as a rip-off and are quite happy to give or receive copies. All I can suggest is that he decide on the minimum number of orders he can live with and have the studio sell them before the concert and collect the money. If there are not sufficient sales then the event is not recorded. If parents know this more of them may be prepared to pay. Another possibility is to charge a much lesser price per disc but include the cost of the disc in the price of the ticket.

A friend of mine protects his home-made CDs / DVDs with "CDShield SE" toolkit. Shareware, AFAIK.

I don't think copy protection is really going to help him much. Most programs will easily bypass all DVD protections now. I would suggest he look into doing something like adding a physical printed program/photo book with the DVDs (if he can without bumping his own costs too much). Something that makes the parent want to own their own actual copy.

I think that the best suggestion is the DL one, most people are not familiar enough with computers to realise that DL Disks even exist.

Ripping a dual layer DVD disc is not that difficult if you've got the right software. For example, with freeware you create image files from any discs/files/folders. IMHO, ImgBurn is probably the best free DVD ripping/burning tool for Windows (Windows 8 compatible) users.
Re-read my post, JW... the average noddy does not know what a DL disk is, most of them think copying is just drag and drop.

Upload to YouTube or other video service with a pay per play (rental style). Many new laptops don't have DVD drives anymore.
You can still copy 4 hours discs to 2 hours ones if the content of the disc is 2 hours or less on the 4hour one without any special programs to shrink it
If all else fails you can always put a tiny scratch down it so it will still play but realy difficult/impossible to copy for the average person
