Default Have I broken my browser?

I am unable to post on another forum so will try here.

I must remember not to fix the OS till it breaks!

EDIT: It works OK on austech.

If your browser shows you a "cannot find server" error, then by cleaning out your computer's DNS cache, you can fix this problem.

    Try another browser, they're free.

The other forum may be offline due to server overload/failure or changed DNS server settings.

I cannot post with any browser!!!!!

I can go to the site, see where the post should be (there is just a blank area), click edit and a new page opens which shows what I want to post but it will not post!

As you suggest Tiny there is probably an issue with the site - wait and see.

Which web browser(s), including version number(s) are you currently using?

I occasionally try to access a new website or a section (page) of a website (e.g. to pay online, download a file etc.), without success.

Usually, a different web browser will be successful, particularly with some troublesome government websites, which tend to be Internet Explorer friendly but a little hostile towards other web browsers.

I first encountered this problem many years ago, and so now, I ALWAYS install more than one browser on any computer which I use personally or set up for others.

My "standard/default" web browser is Mozilla Firefox. I install this on computers which use any flavor of Windows, but also for use with both Linux and Macintosh (Apple) operating systems.

Additionally, I will use Safari, sometimes Tor browser, and very occasionally Internet Explorer, as well as MYIE2 and others. There are many and all are free.

You also need to be aware that sometimes, after installing a browser update, some websites become inaccessible, even though the browser before updating, performed flawlessly.

Also, website updates will sometimes prevent a particular web browser from accessing the site or some page or aspect of the web site.

    Websites sometimes experience "downtime".

In order to see whether a particular website is currently "down", visit somewhere like or . There are many other such sites where you can ascertain whether a particular website is currently "up" or whether it is "down".

Other people have been able to see my post - there have been replies - but it does not show for me!!

    For your information Tiny:

tristen, I have tried FF3.6, palemoon and a couple of versions of seamonkey all on a small Linux OS and Google Chrome (I assume latest version) on a XP machine. Cannot see it on any of them.

I have visited the site at and can currently see four postings, one each by Mercedes350se, Semme, trapster and Anniekin. Is one of the posters you?

You say "Other people have been able to see my post - there have been replies...", which leads me to suggest that you are the OP, Mercedes350se. Correct?

The browser I am using is Firefox 33.1 on Windows XP with SP2 (Several years ago, I experienced problems with SP3, so I avoid it).

I have also accessed the same site on another machine running (Mac) OS X 10.8.5 and Firefox v.33.1.1 with identical results - four posts. I tried also with Safari v.6.2 with the same result.

If you have been able to access the site successfully on previous occasions and nothing on your computer has changed, i.e. no O.S. updates, same browser (and configuration) and you haven't installed anything else in the meantime, it is very unlikely that there is anything wrong with your browser.

But you also say, "I have tried FF3.6, palemoon and a couple of versions of seamonkey all on a small Linux OS and Google Chrome (I assume latest version) on a XP machine. Cannot see it on any of them."

I interpret that to mean that you cannot see your post on TWO of your machines, one running Linux and the other running Windows XP. If this is correct, I'm more than a little mystified.

    Edit...

Curiosity got the better of me.

A Google search indicates that the latest version of Firefox for Linux is v.33.1.1 with v.35 due for release in a few days time ( December 1 of this year).

Are you sure that you are Firefox 3.6 as you have indicated above? This is very old version. Is it the cause of your problem?

This is becoming curiouser and curiouser!

On that forum I was able to ask the mods why i couldn't see my posts - made it the subject line.

I have just been there and now it is all good again. Happy camper!

    Yes and yes and no.

I know it is old but I cannot find anything modern that will work correctly with my old OS. The only issue I have is that it does not render the TV guide page correctly - it is still usable so I am living with it.

I have no desire to update the OS. I am very comfortable with it and it does, almost everything, I want.

    I'm still curious!

All we need to know now, is how, specifically, was the problem fixed?
