The only operating system I have continuing problems with is Windows.

I have machines running Linux and (Mac) OS X (both based on Unix) and they continue to work with very few hiccups.

There are two reasons I continue to use Windows - (1) in order to keep abreast of Windows developments and (2) because it is the most widely used O.S. and many applications, including ones which I use on a fairly regular basis, are written for Windows only - although that situation is improving slowly.

I've used Linux on an off for a few years, my latest attempt was only a couple of weeks back. Ended up going back to Windoze on my lappy because I did not have the time to muck around getting everything to work as it should. One of the "deal breakers" was actually a Windoze problem on my media server which is usually rock solid. It turns out that to save power Windoze (Vista onwards) turns off the netwrok adapter. Other Windoze machines (Vista on) can convince it to wake up again but not anything else. So, one minute I had all my shares working happily and then, all of a sudden I lost them all. Took me too long to work that one out! Apart from that I agree Linux is a good alternative and I might even try it on my lappy again. (I've just put W7 back on it as a result of the aforementioned problem so do not want to have to configure everything again). Firefox for Linux seems to have a fiew issues though, that said, it might be the latest build as, now I'm back on Windoze, some of those issues remain.

My Linux OS of choice is Puppy. In particular 3.01 with the 4.1.2 kernel. It is lightweight, about 100MB download, and is extremely user friendly. There is a very active forum if you want to ask or give advice.

It will run from LiveCD or USB.

I've just done away with my last Linux machine in (sort of) regular use because i did not have the time to convince it that the Windoze machines on the network actually had shares that it was allowed to look at. Nor could I (easily) convince it that it was, in fact, supposed to be a print server. To be fair, I have been running Linux on this machine for some weeks and have spent an inordinate amount of time just playing with those issues rather than just getting on with the job. Today was the last straw as I needed a file on my server (W7 based) and needed to print it (Linux based). I am now back in the Windoze camp until I feel the need for a little more masochism.
