[Windows Vista, 7 und 8] The "Shadow Explorer" utility
When you create a restore point with Windows or it's automatically generated when you install a software or an update, you can not directly access the files in this restore point.
But there is freeware tool . By default, you can restore with Shadow Explorer only the entire recovery point (shadow copy): When you start the program you will be shown a screen listing all the drives and the dates that a shadow copy was created; select the drive and date that you wish to restore from.
Best you can also restore an older version of an existing file, you simply click the right mouse button on the file and select "Restore Previous version".
When downloading the program, you can either use the full install download or the portable version as both perform the same functionality. I recommend to use the portable version.
Note: Requires Microsoft .NET.

Or you can do what many Windoze users do and turn off system restore all together......
