Wonder if you buy a key install and later change your hardware you won't be able to transfer your license key to your new hardware?

If the hardware configuration of your actual machine with a retail copy of Windows 10 installed on it changes significantly (e.g. motherboard change) Windows 10 may require re-activation on the device. This because every Windows license is tied to "that" PC.

This is the same experience as prior versions of Windows (e.g. Windows 7 and Windows 8.1) and you’ll need to contact Microsoft's Support.

Given that upgraders do not receive a product key I wonder how Microsoft would be identifying such a configuration to permit it to activate again, ie, how the heck would I convey to Microsoft the fingerprint of my PC prior to the motherboard change given that the fingerprint has now changed.

The Windows 10 upgrade is for 'the life of the computer'. Any eventual hardware change that invalidates the activation (there are several things that are included in the fingerprinting, changing one of them won't invalidate it) may well mark what Microsoft considers to be the end of life of the machine.

From other posts it appears to be tied to the motherboard. All other 'upgradable' parts can apparently be switched out/changed - likely within reason.

If the OS doesn't automatically activate a call to MS should resolve the issue.

Old laptop working well- Compaq with Sempron processor Nvidia graphics 4gb ram on Win 10 clean install
Disabled heaps of unwanted apps etc and use firefox as browser

Finally got rid of the auto-start of Onedrive by using Glary Utilities

Starts quickly and shuts down properly

    It was worth the exercise

Now to see if it will dual-boot linux without borking it

Installed Linux Mint Mate 15 32 bit
Grub showed 2 x Windows options- and booted ok from first option (sdb1) and win10 opened ok

    Now dual boot

Even when you got Windows 10 running on your PC, you might run into issues. Once issue that happens is simply being referred to as the Something Happened error. It’s called that because that’s what shows up on-screen:

Most times this "undefined" error is caused by third-party programs.

Microsoft offers a tool you can try to automatically fix this issue and it is called the .

Shutdown w10 caused a start-up loop and only shutdown was power button
found the solution below and now the dual-boot shuts down correctly:
    TURN OFF FAST START
"To Turn "Fast Startup" On or Off ...go to regedit

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Contro l\Session Manager\Power
    HiberbootEnabled DWORD

0 = Turn off Fast Startup
1 = Turn on Fast Startup"

    EDIT

2 restarts fine then looped again
Zapped dual-boot and reinstalling clean from iso
Glad it is a spare machine

Default Rollback to the previous version Windows from theWindows 10 boot menu

You have upgraded your system to Windows 10, but it is a total failure? Windows 10 works abnormally or fails to start? All is not lost. Here is how to roll back to your previous version of Windows, along with your data.

    Step 1:

    Access the advanced startup options
Consider yourself lucky as since Windows 10, the boot menu has been improved in many ways. To access it, simply tap the Shift + F8 keys at startup. Repeat the operation as many times as necessary.

    Step 2:

    1. If you have a backup
If you made a backup, then it is time to use it. Click Advanced Options, and then select Use System Recovery Image. With a little luck, you can restore Windows 7 / 8.1.

    2. If you do not have a backup
If you do not have a backup, restart your computer while holding down Shift + F8 to access the boot menu. Then go to Advanced Options > Go back to Windows 8.1/7. If you're lucky, Windows 10 will restore your previous OS along with all your documents.

Important: This operation is only available for a month after upgrading to Windows 10.

My Windows 8.1 had installed Windows Media Centre but I understand that Windows 10 has done away with this so I wonder where my next option lies, perhaps Kodi, but even with Kodi - a program I've never used before I would need install a back end suitable to Australia

Can any one give any guidance??

    cheers
In hindsight I should have posted my Facebook status as: "I've blown the head gasket on my 1997 XR3i" rather than "I've just buggered a 14 year old escort".
The police still haven't seen the funny side, my lap top's been confiscated and the wife has gone off to her mum's.

Don’t Let Microsoft Steal Your Bandwidth

By default, Microsoft turns your computer into a peer-to-peer node to help it distribute Windows 10 updates, in order to save Microsoft server bandwidth costs. “Microsoft calls it Windows Update Delivery Optimization,” or WUDO. WUDO really should have been turned off by default, because it may slow you down and may even cost you additional money if you have a metered connection.

Info about turning off p2p update delivery, plus plenty of other settings to turn off can be found at the link below.

Have KODI 15 "Isengard" installed. Runs without hassles. Won't miss it!

    1. Unfortunately KODI ( at time of this writing ) is only available as 32-bit app.

    2. Do customize KODI's installation process: Uncheck both Microsoft C++ redistributables and Direct-X, they aren't needed in Windows 10

Thanks mickstv - that is one page everyone should read on how to change some settings.

My setup account is local only, and have no interest in having a Microsoft account to allow them to spy.
Nor do I have a "One Drive" account, or anything uploaded to the cloud "internet" yet.

I've gone further into SETTINGS and went through all menus on the left side of PRIVACY under SETTINGS.

These are changes that I've made, but, it's up to the reader as to how much info they want Microsoft and supporters to know about them:

GENERAL - all 4 settings to "off"
LOCATION - locations for this device is "off" (for me); and, your discretion, but I chose to select "off" to all apps.
CAMERA - let apps use my camera - I turned mine to off; and all apps set to off.
MICROPHONE - let apps use my microphone, mine is "off", with list of apps all set to "off".
    SPEECH... no settings to change
ACCOUNT INFO - let apps access my name, picture and other account info, mine is "off".
CONTACTS - choose apps that can access contacts, mine is "off".
CALENDAR - let apps access my calendar, mine is set to "off", including all apps listed.
MESSAGING - let apps read or send messages text or mms; mine is set to "off".
RADIOS - let apps control radios, mine set to "off".
OTHER DEVICES - sync with devices, mine set to "off".
FEEDBACK & DIAGNOSTICS - windows should always ask for my feedback, mine set to "always"; AND, send your device data to Microsoft, mine set to "Basic".
BACKGROUND APPS - lets apps run in the background, all apps set as "off".

Obviously, if you wanted to use Bluetooth, you would turn "Radio" on for the time you need it, then turn it off afterwards; and so on

The biggest issue I have above, is that sending device data back to Microsoft can't be disabled yet.

    SERVICES.MSC

Other things I have disabled, are "Offline Maps".
If you're on a limited internet plan, it will pay to disable the offline maps, where Microsoft download maps to your computer without you knowing so you can view maps when not on the internet.
All well and good if you have no limits to your internet plan, but also, what other info is being transferred at the same time.
Also, if your internet is very slooooow, it allows better control of your broadband when you need it.
If I'm after maps, I use Googles internet maps.

This is disabled by going in to services.msc; scroll down for "Downloaded Maps Manager"; select "Disabled".

At the same time if you wish to, scroll down to "Windows Search" and disable that too.
    This disables the "Cortana" search.

Scroll further down and you will see "Windows Update".
Disabling this disables automatic checking and downloading of Windows & other Microsoft updates automatically.
Obviously, changing this back to manual or auto weekly is the best option to receive security patch updates, but it does allow YOU to control further what bandwidth is being used and when.

I'm sure there will be more, but, the more people talk about them, the more we understand what we are really sharing without knowing.

It's not about being paranoid, it's all about having control. Having control, gives you options.

none of this actually answers the primary question - what backend to use for Australia, but like I said, thanks for your attempt anyway

    Default Windows 10 Services Configuration

Windows 10 (desktop editions as launched July 29, 2015) comes with >200 services, the programs Windows 10 loads, mostly at startup, and that operate in the background. Most of them are essential for the core system features. Windows services can be configured to start when the operating system is started and run in the background as long as Windows is running. Alternatively, they can be started manually or by an event. Also they can be disabled.

To enumerate the Windows services that come with your Windows 10 edition you
    1. Click on the Search the web and Windows box
    2. Type Control Panel (or enough letters so it appears in the results)
    3. Select Control Panel (under Results)
    4. Select Programs
    5. Select Programs and Features
    6. Select Turn Windows Features on or off

On my Windows 10 Home for example there are 232 services listed. Some of them are safe to disable, depending on how you use your computer. If you don’t use certain features and you are sure you won’t use them in the future, go ahead and disable those services that you won’t need. Disabling unneeded services can have a positive impact on performance. Probably it's safe to disable up to 50 services, as I have done.

IMPORTANT NOTE: Before you start making changes, you should first either completely export registry's key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\servic es to a file named services-default.reg - or how you'll name it - (will be put into Documents folder and is of ~10 KB of size only) or create a system restore point. This way, if something doesn’t work, you can always reverse the changes you made.

Finally am getting the dual boot W10 and linux sorted
Used this link and all is working- W10 and Linux Mint Mate 32bit

Also installed grub-customizer to see if it worked
The new grub menu shows a windows recovery as the boot option- is a bit slower but works and no more start up loops

    Now to keep fine tuning

If you updated via upgrade, don't forget you can get rid of Windows old, but back up first. On my mini computer i use for Kodi, this releases about 16gb

Thank you very very much for that link.

Turning off all those privacy settings & especially the p2p stetting has made my current internet experience bearable.

Unfortunately, although I like W10 so far, the unknown data usage of download before & during installation & subsequent program updates amounted to ~5GB in one day for my 64bit Pro upgrade, which has taken me over my data allowance for this month.
    I was expecting maybe ~3GB

Normally this wouldn't be a problem as I would just buy a data block, however the NBN interim Satellite Broadband Plan admin have now oversold their available bandwidth & withdrawn all data block additions & are shaping anyone who goes over data allowance to a speed of 56kb/s (yes dial-up speed). Previously we were shaped to 512kb/s which is usable.
Had I been informed of this I would have waited until the last day of my billing period to do the W10 upgrade as it takes about 4 to 6 hours for the shaping to kick in & by that time you have used free data at full speed.

    rant over......

back to W10; For those holding off to see if difficult to run programs on new operating systems like Reckon (aka Quicken) Accounts, Lotus SmartSuite, Garmin MapSource, Cyberlink Power Director, all are working with no problems on my setup. Even DVD Decrypter still works.

Old windows programs such as Internet Explorer & Windows Media Player still work & all settings, favorites, playlists etc are available.
Had to change some file associations for image, video & music back to WMP & or iTunes & or VLC.

Graphics card, Nvidia geforce GTX680 - everything working as it should. The latest driver I downloaded for it prior to install is the current one installed after W10 upgrade.

No install hiccups/dramas at all, everything went smooth apart from my data usage blowing out.

Hopefully this post will upload on dial-up, very very slowly.
    Cheers, Tiny
