    And that's it. The only option is to sign out.
    That kills the system for now. You can't even roll back to Win7 from there, only clean install will work.
    Not impressed so far. Now have to wait for Microsoft to come up with a fix, until then my recently upgrade Win10 machine is unusable.

    I actually found a work around that fixed the issue. Certainly Microsoft needs to release an update to address the problem.

    For all users who might face the same Critical Error and find out they can't do much with the machine, I suggest trying the following method before wiping clean their PC. It certainly solved the issue for me.

    1. Press Ctr - Shift - Esc to bring Task manager.
    2. Go to File menu and Run New Task
    3. Type in Control panel
    4. Go to Security - Power options and modify what power buttons do.
    5. Deselect "Turn On Fast start up" check box.
    6. Restart PC.

    It seems that Cortana process is not starting fast enough when you start loading your PC with new processes. In my case the problem happened after I added mediaPortal with SQL which is running TV server on background.

    seems odd to have to edit the registry to get it working, not sure I understand the peculiarities of Win 10 but whatever the case your suggestion worked so thanks very much JW

    After reading all the pages, my conclusion is that Microsoft don't give any thing away for free and there is no such thing as a free lunch
    I'm surprised most are blithely going along and down loading it and for going all their personal information to some foreign company/government when a current operating system is more than adequate, eg Win 8.1 with classic shell

    The laptop used by my Son has just been updated from 7 to Win10 that started late last night.
    He said notifications about it had been appearing for the last few days but he had just 'clicked' them off but last night it didnt take NO for an answer and went ahead and updated.

    I have to say I find my computer seems to start a bit faster than it did on Win8 and open sites quicker too so either it is faster or maybe it scrubbed out some of the crap accumulated in the couple of years.

    No one is obliged to use / switch to Windows 10. No one is obliged to use any Windows XXX edition. You like Windows 10 or dislike it. But if using Windows as operating system, then Windows 10 is the future. It leads no way around.

    Yes would probably have been more than beneficial for Microsoft if they would have added an alert like this one

    to the Sign-in screen of Windows 10.

    All Windows editions prior to Windows 8 / 8.1 already are a dead operating system. Mainstream support for Windows 8 and/or Windows 8.1 ends 1/9/2018. So you can run Windows 8 and/or Windows 8.1 yet the next 3 years.

    Precisely. And if no one did, you would be amazed at how quickly all the intrusive privacy shit came out of the product in response.

    Windows Support?? The oxymoron of our times.

    I was attempting to update my genuine Win 7 Pro (64bit) with the win7 64 bit update, but it doesn't want to play!

    Also, by co-incidence my brother -who is an IT manager/analyst by profession -rang me today to say"whatever you do don't install Windows 10".

    He had done so today with no apparent issues, but finds that his PC is now shutting down with a critical error every 10 minutes.

    So I think I'll give up on Win10 (at least for now).

    i have been running 10 since i was first able to get my hands on it with no problems at any stage

    i have beta tested since win 2000 and all through testing all windows versions,since then any error have been caused by hardware or software

    win 2000 was the worst and when i sorted it i found all problems were caused by a underpowered psu

    when you have a critical or any other error you check to see what is causing it

    you may be paying through the nose to your ISP.

    Though this line:
    To add insult to injury, Microsoft has confirmed it is hijacking users' internet connections to upload software updates to other users, through "peer-to-peer" technology.
    is of more concern. If that "peer" has a particularly nasty payload......

    To give mickeymouse his due:
    "As with Windows 8.1, Windows 10 won't automatically download updates or apps if it detects the PC uses a metered connection," the spokesman said.
    n I do wonder, though, how they determine if you are on a metered connection.
    I'm out of my mind, but feel free to leave a message...

    If it detects you are using a mobile network it supposedly considers it to be metered. There is an option in the updates IIRC that lets you manually specify a given connection is metered.

    The distributed updates should be signed, ie if they aren't genuine the downloading PC should discard them. I'm sure flaws big enough to drive a bus through that permit miscreants to side step this check will be found in time.

    For anyone that hasn't read my thread on I discovered while researching options for my Sound Device Hardware an annoying default in W10 that can be switched off.

    W10 by default will periodically search for & update drivers for all your hardware without telling you!!
    This may be good for some & maybe the majority, however in my case W10's ideal choice of driver for my sound hardware does not work as I would like it to.
    In Windows 10, your device is always kept up to date with the latest features and fixes. Updates and drivers are installed automatically, with no need to select which updates are needed or not needed. In rare cases, a specific driver or update might temporarily cause issues with your device, and in this case you will need a way to prevent the problematic driver or update from reinstalling automatically the next time Windows Updates are installed.

    This automatic updating of drivers can be turned off if you like.

    Just follow this;
    1: Right click your start button, click system, and then go to advanced system settings
    2: Go to hardware tab and go to device installation settings
    3: Click "No, let me choose what to do", then click "Never install driver software from Windows Update", then click save changes.
    4: This is optional if you want to only be able to update drivers manually; Untick " Automatically get the device application and information provided by your device manufacturer.
    Don't forget to Save changes.
    Now you can choose which driver to install for your hardware device.

    Looks like this.

    You can also black list a driver update by doing the following;
    Go to - download the .diagcab file. (Windows 10 has removed the ability to blacklist updates without using this file)
    Go through the steps and choose to ignore the 'abcdxxxxx' update that is queued up.
    Cheers, Tiny

    All well and good, but as you have to run this tool prior to Windows Update, in my eyes it is actually impractical because one does not know when Windows 10 is really looking for updates.

    In a German forum related to Windows 10 I found "WindowsUpdateControl.CMD" script (note this must be run as Administrator), which allows you to disable Windows Update and afterwards to search manually for available Updates

    Code:
    @echo off
    : ********************************************************************
    : Put this file, WindowUpdateControl.cmd, and The Windows Update Show-Hide Tool
    : file, wushowhide.diagcab, in X:\WindowsUpdateControl and run this as
    : administrator.
    : *******************************************************************
    echo ******************************
    echo This utility enables automatic updates,
    echo then runs the Windows Update Show-Hide Tool,
    echo and then disables automatic updates
    echo giving you full control.
    echo ******************************
    echo Are you running this as administrator?
    echo If so press Enter to continue…
    echo Otherwise hit ctrl-c to exit.
    pause > nul
    @echo off
    echo *** Enabling Windows Updates ***
    @echo on
    sc config wuauserv start= auto
    net start wuauserv
    @echo off
    echo **********************************************************
    echo Press a key to run Windows Update Show-Hide Tool.
    echo Don’t close this window or automatic updates will stay on!
    echo **********************************************************
    pause
    : Change the drive letter below from C if yours is different.
    @echo on
    C:\WindowsUpdateControl\wushowhide.diagcab
    @echo off
    echo ********************************
    echo Press a key to to disable automatic updates, or
    echo ctrl-c to exit and leave automatic updates turned on.
    pause > nul
    @echo on
    sc config wuauserv start= disabled
    net stop wuauserv
    @echo off
    echo **************************
    echo Windows Updates Completed.
    echo Press a key to exit.
    echo **************************
    pause > nul
    For your convenience I've created a .ZIP-archive containing folder "WindowsUpdateControl" which is containing files "WindowUpdateControl.cmd" and "wushowhide.diagcab".

    Is it possible that WIN10 Upgrade ate my Kaspersky Virus program?
    Back at the beginning of August I renewed my license but after the WIN10 update and I had that Malware problem, I realised that Kaspersky seemed to be 'missing'.
    No desktop shortcut, no mention in files etc, etc, etc, no matter what searchers or where I looked, it just wasnt there.
    Just now I was in my ISP's email program which I dont use much and found the payment details and activation code for the renewal and a download site and now I have Kaspersky 'back in business'.

    I renewed the license to use Kaspersky at least a week before it was due to expire but even if it had, it would not have just 'disapeared' so I can only guess either WIN10 ate it or I didnt click on or off something during the WIN10 update.
    I dont know if not having Kaspersky running when I picked up the Malware problem or not but thats why I have it 'Just in Case' so I am not happy if WIN10 did 'remove' it.
    I stand unequivicably behind everything I say , I just dont ever remember saying it !!

    Did Win10 upgrade last nite, switched on this morning and Bitdefender reloaded itself and asked for the log in details as a new install?
