All well and good, but as you have to run this tool prior to Windows Update, in my eyes it is actually impractical because one does not know when Windows 10 is really looking for updates.
In a German forum related to Windows 10 I found "WindowsUpdateControl.CMD" script (note this must be run as Administrator), which allows you to disable Windows Update and afterwards to search manually for available Updates
Code:
@echo off
: ********************************************************************
: Put this file, WindowUpdateControl.cmd, and The Windows Update Show-Hide Tool
: file, wushowhide.diagcab, in X:\WindowsUpdateControl and run this as
: administrator.
: *******************************************************************
echo ******************************
echo This utility enables automatic updates,
echo then runs the Windows Update Show-Hide Tool,
echo and then disables automatic updates
echo giving you full control.
echo ******************************
echo Are you running this as administrator?
echo If so press Enter to continue…
echo Otherwise hit ctrl-c to exit.
pause > nul
@echo off
echo *** Enabling Windows Updates ***
@echo on
sc config wuauserv start= auto
net start wuauserv
@echo off
echo **********************************************************
echo Press a key to run Windows Update Show-Hide Tool.
echo Don’t close this window or automatic updates will stay on!
echo **********************************************************
pause
: Change the drive letter below from C if yours is different.
@echo on
C:\WindowsUpdateControl\wushowhide.diagcab
@echo off
echo ********************************
echo Press a key to to disable automatic updates, or
echo ctrl-c to exit and leave automatic updates turned on.
pause > nul
@echo on
sc config wuauserv start= disabled
net stop wuauserv
@echo off
echo **************************
echo Windows Updates Completed.
echo Press a key to exit.
echo **************************
pause > nul
For your convenience I've created a .ZIP-archive containing folder "WindowsUpdateControl" which is containing files "WindowUpdateControl.cmd" and "wushowhide.diagcab".
