Jow Blob, you are being a complete idiot and a scaremonger, and all to try and justify your so called argument. This has everything to do with "Windows 10 Free Upgrade" as I have argued all along, you can download the relevant ISO for your system, and as long as your system qualifies, i.e. running OEM Win7, Win8, or Win8.1 you can update your system using that ISO, without having to go through Microsoft's GWX bullshit. Have a read

Specifically under "If you choose to create installation media"

You can install from an ISO, a USB, or a DVD. Here's how:

    • Mount the ISO, and then run setup.exe from it.
    • If you downloaded to a USB or a DVD, run setup.exe from the USB or DVD.

Both of these options allow you to upgrade the PC if it's already running Windows 7, Windows 8, Windows 8.1, or Windows 10.

Wrong again, no Key is required if doing the upgrade, as long as you already have a valid version of Win7 or onwards on the machine, I have used the ISO file to Upgrade Win7 Ultimate OEM to Windows 10 Pro on 3 machnes and it is fully activated on all 3, all were already 64Bit, so stop spewing your bullshit allover this forum and just admit your wrong

I thing those keys were only for the pre-release versions.

Hey Jow Blob, you better get on to these guys and tell them they don't know what they are talking about as well,

    and just so that you don't miss it I'll highlight for you;

On the media creation tool page, select the proper version—check the system settings to double-check whether you’re running a 32- or 64-bit OS. Then download and run it. Though simple, the tool has a number of lovely features—including the ability to simply upgrade the PC. Yes, it’s true—you don’t need the Windows 10 reservation, as the tool will simply jump you to the head of the line. Even better, you can select whether you want Windows 10 Home or Windows 10 Professional, either 32-bit or 64-bit versions, and even the installation language.

I can confirm, - Upgraded my 8.1 perfectly (also upgraded my dodgy Core 2 as well )
    Running like a dream

I think you and your neighbour were sitting there jacking off and not concentrating Joey - Christ, it's not rocket science.
In hindsight I should have posted my Facebook status as: "I've blown the head gasket on my 1997 XR3i" rather than "I've just buggered a 14 year old escort".
The police still haven't seen the funny side, my lap top's been confiscated and the wife has gone off to her mum's.

LOL - actually the installation, My ridgy didge system is an AMD FX 8350 @4,01Ghz / 16Gb RAM and running a genuine 8.1 in 64bit with an Nvidia Quadro K2000 2GB
the other, my Dual Core (E6750) is my dodgy torrent downloader hidden behind PureVPN running a hacked Windows 8.0 pro

Both updated and activated without any issue

    Thanks again

AL Bundy, I would have far preferred to take up your generous offer but it seems M/S has decided otherwise and I now have WIN10, WHOOOOPEEE but other than a task bar loaded with god knows what, so far I cant see much difference.

I downloaded the tool and made an iso from the link Al posted and upgraded no problem.
No need to enter a product key either.

    Thanks Al.

Just to confirm what Al has been saying all along:
    Before you begin
•Make sure you have: •An internet connection (internet service provider fees may apply).
•Sufficient data storage available on a computer, USB or external drive for the download.
•A blank USB or DVD (and DVD burner) with at least 4 GB of space if you want to create media. We recommend using a blank USB or blank DVD, because any content on it will be deleted.

    •Read the System Requirements.
•If you will be installing the operating system for the first time, you will need your Windows product key (xxxxx-xxxxx-xxxxx-xxxxx-xxxxx). For more information about product keys and when they are required, visit the FAQ page.

Use the media creation tool to download Windows. This tool provides the best download experience for customers running Windows 7, 8.1 and 10. To learn how to use the tool, go to the Installing Windows 10 using the media creation tool page. Tool includes: •File formats optimized for download speed.
•Built in media creation options for USBs and DVDs.
•Optional conversion to ISO file format.

If you’re on an Enterprise edition, the media creation tool won’t work for an upgrade. Please see the Volume Licensing Service Center for more information.
    Source:

It looks like your neighbour was trying to boot from the dvd/iso/usb or do a clean install.
You run the dvd/iso/usb from within Windows and it doesn't ask for a key.

Last night after upgrading I went to shut the computer down (1.30am) and couldnt find the bloody OFF as Windows 10 doesnt have that 'pop up' when you sweep the mouse off the screen.
After much clicking I find its now in that 'app' on the bottom left of the Task bar.

Also its changed the 'screen size' of my emails (yahoo) and on some I cant see the whole 'page'.
I am using a 22 inch Flat screen TV as a monitor so I dont know if thats a problem.
I stand unequivicably behind everything I say , I just dont ever remember saying it !!

You've been using windoze 8, haven't you, Gordon? (wry smile) The Off button is back on the "start" menu where it has always been.
as for the resolution issue, not sure about that one what is your e-mail client? It may be more to do with the actual client, than the OS.
I'm out of my mind, but feel free to leave a message...

Before with win8, to open that 'window' with the various features like Off etc, you swept the mouse to either the RIGHT top or bottom (top preferred) off the screen and it would appear.
This 'window' would appear no matter what you had on the screen but it dont work now.
The small window logo (Start?) on the bottom LEFT in the task bar only ever displayed either the Desktop or that plethora of APP's, half of which I had no idea what to do with them.
I think using a TV instead of a monitor and the email client (Yahoo) is causing this problem with the emails (text) being bigger then the screen.
I stand unequivicably behind everything I say , I just dont ever remember saying it !!
