Avid is soon releasing a free version of their professional multi-track sound recording / mixing / editing software.
It's called Pro Tools First and you can read about it and register your interest here and they will notify you when it is available.

What you should know:
If you want to run Avid Pro Tools in Windows OS, then
1. 64-bit Windows operating systems (Windows 8 is supported)
2. total System RAM: 4GB minimum, 8GB (or more) recommended
