Yes I am aware of the difference. I put "update" in quotes to differentiate the Windoze 10 upgrade from the regular "patch Tuesday" updates. I still have no issues with "patch Tuesday" on any of my machines. (I regularly run 4 machines at home) and set up machines for others and, as already stated, so far none have been problem. FWIW I currently have two machines running W10, one on W7 (waiting for the automatic "update") and one running XP. FWIW, the only patches waiting in the update advisor are For M$ Orifice 2010. At the moment, that is.
I'm out of my mind, but feel free to leave a message...

Well the is still struggling with cumulative updates failing(KB3116900) as in snip pic below, however this time it appears Microsoft have replaced the failing cumulative update with a new one that installs correctly & brings us to build 10586.36 or I just lucked out.

Windows 10 by stealth
OK; back in the OP I had a solution for preventing windows update from trying to install already installed updates or broken & unwanted updates by simply hiding them. Works for previous versions of Win OS not 8 -10.
Now in Win 10 as well as 8 & 8.1, that solution does not work.
So here is the solution.
1: you download a free Microsoft troubleshooter called wushowhide.diagcab at or
find it on this page
2: execute it by clicking on it.
3: It will start up & say
Show or Hide Updates
Select next
4: Detecting problems
Searching for updates..
5:Select "Hide updates".
6: Tick the update that you want hidden,
Then click Next
7: you will get this message "Resolving Problem"
Just wait.
8: then it will say
Troubleshooting has completed.
Close the trouble shooter.
Update is now hidden & can be restored at any time using the same trouble shooter. By using "Show hidden updates" at step 5.
That easy.
For me the Canon driver it was trying to install was too old & kept failing, so I had to get rid of it & manually install the correct driver.
Hope this helps someone who hasn't found the solution.
