    Default Advice about installing Wifi.

Hi. Totally new to all this. Have an aerial on roof connected to a BPond Ultimate 4G modem and a short USB cable going to my desktop computer. I want to 'connect' Wifi so we can use a new laptop elsewhere in the house. Do I need to get a Wifi modem from BPond (Ahhh!-pain), or could a bought device from eg. ebay, do the job? Desk top Windows 7, has no Wifi, laptop Windows 8.1 obviously does.
Can the Wifi units take the small jack that fits into the Ultimate modem?
    Thanks for any help.

The Ultimate 4G appears to be a so it's really just a matter of connecting the Win 8 laptop to the router.
You will need to access your router by opening a web browser and typing the routers IP address (usually something like ) .
Once you have access to your router set your WiFi settings, the Security measures you would like enable and ensure it is broadcasting.

This should help get you started
In hindsight I should have posted my Facebook status as: "I've blown the head gasket on my 1997 XR3i" rather than "I've just buggered a 14 year old escort".
The police still haven't seen the funny side, my lap top's been confiscated and the wife has gone off to her mum's.

Put into your Windows 7 desktop a second network card, for example the TP-LINK TL-WN881ND WIFI PCI-E Adapter (300Mbit/s, Windows 8.1/8/Vista/7/XP) which costs ~ $25 AUD. Or an equivalent product.

Then on your desktop use the Windows 7 inbuilt Internet Connection Sharing (ICS) feature to turn the desktop into a WiFi hotspot.

    Thanks Guys.
My modem is not the Wifi depicted unfortunately.
Had a look at PC Case Gear.com.au. They have the TP-Link above for $19. They also have a Netcomm ADSL2+ PIC 1200 Wifi for $159. This has a USB port that would accept the BPond modem and has also a port for NBN should I ever get satellite. Is my choice wise? or your thoughts! Is there anything else that I would require, so I can order all at the same time and save on postage. Cheers.

No model number listed - only BPond Ultimate Broadband USB. It is black, Sierra Wireless approximately 55 x 45 x 10mm in size. Gets its power form the USB port.

Well if your not prepared to get a Wireless option off Telstra (or some other source) then essentially you will have to follow the options offered by Jwogerbauer.
Easy enough to do but if your as inexperienced as you say you are then you find it's a little bit of a learning curve.

When I received my last modem it would not connect. Four bloody hours on the phone, being passed from pillar to post, then had to wait until Sydney opened on Monday as only they could 'activate' the device. Plug in and go, they claim! Hence my reluctance to have anything to do with contacting BP.
I listed, above, the NETCOMM device (the other source) and with about 100 devices being available this is where I am in the dark. If someone can tell me it's a goer, I will be happy. Cheers.

I was thinking of an Access point Leroy but was deterred by the physical connections.
The OP's Modem is not Wi-Fi and as near as I can determine sounds suspiciously like a and I guess like everyone else am left wondering how Telstra can still get away with selling this non Wi-Fi crap, but that aside it would appear that if the OP has a working Internet connection using a NON Wi-Fi device provided by Telstra then for all intents and purposes a similar Wi-Fi device from the same source will work equally as well.
Perhaps the OP could consider setting up a Mobile Hotspot with his mobile phone and then use his laptop to connect to the hotspot but I still feel the easiest (KISS) option is just to get a WIFI version of what he already has.
IMO the version of choice would be the
There is quite a bit of discussion on just this problem over at Whirlpool with the biggest problem appearing to be incompatibility problems between the 320U and other routers.

Not all service providers allow you to create a hotspot for free. Often you'll be charged extra, so you'll definitely want to check with your carrier to make sure the feature is supported.

If you're on a limited data plan, it will be wise to use this option sparingly or when you're in a pinch. Also note that with this ad hoc WiFi connection, you may experience slower speeds. It will depend on how good of a data connection you have, as well as the number of devices that are connected at the same time.

You also must know this feature uses a lot of your mobile phone's battery, so you have to turn the connection off as soon as you're done using it: WiFi is the phone's biggest battery hog!

BTW: Windows Phone 8.x allows you to connect up to 8 devices! And, not all Android devices support tethering and portable hotspots; iPhone does.

In my eyes it is the cheapest solution: only ~ $20. And as OP said, he hasn't a wireless router, he wants his Windows 7 NOT WiFi enabled desktop computer to become a WiFi hotspot. At least I understood it so.

No, what he wants is this from post 1. "I want to 'connect' Wifi so we can use a new laptop elsewhere in the house"

    NO.

Last time I was in cinema is 40 years ago: my wife always fell asleep in all our cinema visits. Money wasted.

Mobile phone hotspots are out unless I want to sit on the roof.
KISS - Can I plug the Sierra USB 320U Aircard ( thanks SB) into the NETCOMM ADSL+2 PIC 1200 WIFI as found on PC CaseGear.com ----> Wifi to laptop(s) elsewhere in home.
Make my desktop Wifi enabled. OR could I use a 3 way USB cable to connect the Sierra to the NETCOMM and the Sierra to my desktop???
    Cheers.

To make your Windows 7 desktop a WiFi client, buy the USB dongle Philquad pointed to. Then you can connect your Windows 7 desktop "wireless" to any WiFi base station.

All the issues you have can easily be solved by replacing your DSL-modem (no-WiFi base station) by a WiFi base station (at least 802.11n or Wireless-N). Doing so there will be no need for a Switch (Note: never use an USB-hub) and a Wireless Broadband Home Network Gateway, meters of cables, etc.pp

Each LAN installation that looks like this

in my eyes is an e-Waste solution, you probably in the future will not be happy with.

Never do forget: In order to create a WiFi connection, both the access point (router) and the client (PC, printer, etc) need to operate on the same band, either 2.4GHz or 5GHz.

In short YES you can plug the USB modem into the Netcomm modem and share the connection. Wifi to the new laptop and Cat5 or Cat6 to the existing Pc.

    Spin.
