Default East link - Light Commercial Vehicle rip off

I just got emailed my East Link statement. One thing I didn't realise when updating the old POS Nissan Patrol grenade is that when using east link the Ford Ranger being a light commercial vehicle has different rates of charge for the same trips! It's almost double!!! I checked my statement and I spent over $25 for trips that used to cost me only $12ish.
It's a vehicle that is used for personal use only so I don't agree with this and see it only as a money grab by east link and city link. It's a vehicle like any other and shouldn't make any difference to the price. What are your thoughts?

Yep... I've had the same issue for years.

It's ridiculous that a Patrol is classified as a car but a 4-door ute isn't.

The popularity of 4x4 utes (with or without canopy) is a huge market for non-commercial use.

I think they should perhaps amend the criteria for the light commercial category.

They are already classified when you call them to add the vehicle to the tag. I'd be surprised if your ute isn't. Look on your account and see if you see the letters LCV.

Now that makes more sense. If your vehicle has commercial registration then you should pay LCV rates on toll roads.

    What ute is it?

    If it's a Falcon/Commodore type.. it's classified as a car.

I had the conversation with Trans Urban.... they classify a vehicle 'built' primarily for the transport of passengers as a car, but one primarily 'built' for carrying goods as a light commercial.

I argued my Hilux, being 4-door was primarily built for passengers, but they refused to accept it as such.

A dual cab I would classify as built primarily for passengers as opposed a single cab. I mean really if you buy a vehicle primarily for loads then a single cab makes more sense. But who are we to argue?

Mines a FG Turbo 6 Ute, 2 seater with 500Kg load rating.

Im pretty sure i only pay normal car rates on my Etag, if it was more the Mrs would have been jumping up and down about it as i regularly use the toll ways.

Funny thing if you visit the Ford website, they view it as a light commercial vehicle, like the Ranger.

The vehicle manufacturers however would disagree with you. The Toyota Hilux, Ford Ranger, VW Amorak and Holden Colorado are all described as 'light commercial vehicles' and not 'passenger' vehicles.

If Your Eastlink is a Private Toll Road operator they set what the vehicle classification is, not what you register it as with the State so they can set what ever rate they want and like most companies, pay it or dont use it.
The rates are set in consultation with the Government of the day but the operator is there to make money and charges as much as they can to get a return for their shareholders.
Anything can be used commercially, even a pair of Roller Skates when you come down to it.
I stand unequivicably behind everything I say , I just dont ever remember saying it !!

BTW Leroy, it's not just Eastlink... it applies to all the toll roads.
