I hope UBER shake things up all over the world.
Australia is not that bad compared to other parts of the world.
Last year i pre paid top dollar for a Taxi ride from KL Airport to KL Central, the pre paid idea is there to stop Taxi Drivers ripping you off, as everyone pays the same amount, gets a docket, which you redeem outside at the Taxi rank.

    Sounds fool proof enough...

Only what happens in real life is completely different.
The nice new White Taxi's you think you are getting in, quickly moves off with no passengers and a beat up old shit box, with a screw driver as a gear shift and boot you wouldn't put your mother in-law in, swiftly takes its place (have the photo to prove it).

    Yep.... You've been had.
The guy controlling the rank, pockets the full price fare, and you get the cheapest not even roadworthy taxi available.

So fark em i say, let them die.
I spoke to a few Melbourne UBER users that made me start this thread recently, asking them do they still use the service etc.

    Answers.

    Its faster
    Its cleaner
You can get an UBER heaps quicker than a Taxi.
They even admit, its not always cheaper, but they would never trade the price difference for the pick-up speed, cleanliness of vehicle and politeness of the UBER driver.

Taxi Drivers here are no different to Union Job Sites, they all been living in this protected bubble of entitlements for too long.
With no real need to try and impress, as there is no real competition.
They have been laying in that fat paddock for too long, and they never thought the gravy train would end.

It appears from many comments that the Taxi Industry in Victoria is a shambles and is rife for a 'take Over' by the UBER service however in NSW from what I have seen, they put the 'burr under the blanket' some years ago and made the industry clean up its act and police it to try to keep it at the required level.
If the Industry continues to meet these requirements then I am against the UBER service operating because its unfair to expect some to pay large fees and comply to a set of rules and fee's that another is not obliged to met to run a similar service.
I stand unequivicably behind everything I say , I just dont ever remember saying it !!

Whilst I agree that the taxi industry needs a shake up. I also do not believe that it is fair to force them to compete with Uber until Uber either comply with same requirements for a taxi service, or the taxi industry is permitted to work on the same basis as Uber.
I'm out of my mind, but feel free to leave a message...

In other forward thinking countries, they just developed a new licence, "licensed private hire vehicle". Which includes Passenger Insurance. And away they went.
The thing i find interesting about all these services, is they are pre paid, so it is far safer for the driver.
Including cities that use Apps like Uber or MyTeski to Hire their existing Taxi fleets, it can all be cashless and paid in advance.

Safer for the driver (less bashings or runners)
Safer for the Passenger (Agreed Price)
    Improves Job Security.

And hence, the driver will now take the most direct route as he can no longer "run up the meter".
Taxis will still be on our streets for people to use as they have been.
But the longer fairs, like Airport transfers etc, will go to people who have time to shop around.
Its the Airport pick ups where the trouble is going to start between Traditional Taxi Cartels and the Private Hire fleet.
Especially as App Technology allows people to book their Airport transfers before they even leave home now, or even leave the country.

    Default Uber at Airports

Uber at Airports is a whole other story.
With so many of them being banned from doing Airport Pick Ups and the Area being a "Black Spot" on the Uber App itself
(So when you open the App, there is no drivers near by, and you cant call for them)

But... There is a way everyone is getting around that.

And if some people are getting upset over Uber, the horse as already bolted, even Uber has been under cut by drivers that just use Whatsapp and Viber.
Completely cutting out the App, its fees, everything, you just deal direct, one on one with the driver.
They provide a photo of the Vehicle, its Rego, Photo of the driver, you agree on a price and then you match details at Pick Up.

You can now organise your Airport Transfers, Rides, from the other side of the world, just by using a Texting App.
Recommended drivers can all be found on various Travel site forums like TripAdvisor etc.

Bad Service is spread fast, Good Service is also spread fast.

Uber is now just one of the many ways to get a personal ride.
Regular Taxis have been caught with their pants down big time.

My Personal Experiance with Uber is Great. Recently We were in melbourne and left the Ford at my Brothers Place. We Rang and booked a taxi 24 hours before and My Misses rang them 1 hour before to ensure they would be on time, Well we waited and waited and after 30 Minutes late My Wife called to see what was going on, the 13CABS call operator was rude and said we may need to pay a Higher fee is a MAXI taxi arrived sooner, ( We ordered a wagon for 3 of us and some Luggage for A Cruise to NZ we were doing ). the operator hanged up on my Wife ( No Offensive talking or anything from my wife - Was just askign where our Driver was ). while my wife was trying to call back I installed UBER , Setup an account, by now they were 45 Minutes late with no one still there. I clicked on UBER and a Driver was there in 7 Minutes, Turned up same time as a MAXI taxi, Uber driver was clean, well presented and car was clean, I have nothing to say of 13CABS as they were pathetic. I have only ever had to use taxi's several times in my entire life but I can see them going out of business in time with UBER... Where Do I complain to 13CABS....

    Well, this is new....

As if there was much money being an Uber Driver, now there is a company that will lease you a new car to become an UBER driver from $269 a week

Obviously Fuel and Tyres are magical

Then a member of APEX can pick you up.

Ive got a regular customer who was in the building industry that got into Uber.

Was raving on about it a year ago, loved the work and the hours.

Now tells me everyone's doing it and not enough work to go around, the big bucks (which i somehow doubt ever existed) are all gone now.

Every Curry and his dog are doing it, its become another race to the bottom.....

Yeah, where i live i have considered it Godz, but only for the big fares to Melb Airport.
Which if you take a Taxi is $300+

(Trouble with that is, you can Drop Off at Airport, but your can't Pick Up..... So a return fare might be difficult)

But you would make enemies with the local Taxi guy real fast.
I'm actually thinking now, there might be a possibility to build an Uber idea into Tourist Trips around the Ocean Road.

But as you say, its a race to the bottom
The local Taxi guy was already complaining 3 or 4 years ago about UBER taking his long distance fairs, and they (The UBER Driver) were travelling 50minutes to 1 hour just to Pick Up the fair from under his nose for less money.

Not that i've looked for a while now, but i'd say UBER take too much, Then your Running Costs, Then TAX... Always needing a new vehicle, it would getting marginal at best.

I wonder if their "splend rent" includes insurances? Otherwise that is another lot of costs. Comprehensive and Public Liability, at a minimum would cost a pretty penny, then, of course, you'd be wise to consider Income Protection.........
