VLC?
I wonder if Kodi will run on XP?
Yeh I know XP. It is on an old laptop.
What I want is a decent media player that will play .flv, .mpg files and maybe later ones, say, .mp4.
Suggestions please.

I use VLC on and XP machine and it takes everything I throw at it. (It is a media server for my wife's TV)
I'm out of my mind, but feel free to leave a message...
Vlc is definately the great allrounder. For another idea out of the box depending on your hardware. Linux and kodi 14.2 dual boot or if you dont need to use xp for anything blow the xp install away.
who said i paid for it
I have been using VLC for years and it continues to work flawlessly on all versions of Windows, i.e. Windows XP, 7, 8, 10 and also on Mac OS X.
I highly recommend it.

This mirrors my experiance. VLC ON dapper drake ubuntu through to mint 17. As mick states what ver of linux did you try. ymmv depending on hardware. Tying live isos first is the key to linux newbies.

I am only interested in the laptop so it would seem that frodo would be the first choice as I have gotham running on another system - debian - and am very pleased with it.
I have been a LiveCD junky for years. Crunchbang - no longer supported - I liked but my absolute favourite is Puppy.
