    Aboriginal family, 1910

Remember guys, you can go back to living that way if you like, rather than having this terrible European system imposed on you. There are plenty of areas with on over supply of roos.

Its amazing how far we have progressed in 100 years.

That 1920's picture of Perth looked like it was down town New York, so developed and busy for somewhere so far out.

I wonder if this is today's Wolgan Valley, home to the 5 star Emirates Hotel and the Shale Oil town of Newnes located some 30 kilometres from me.
I stand unequivicably behind everything I say , I just dont ever remember saying it !!

Some just outright amaze me. I presume being a Victorian you are familiar with my town of Rosebud.

    This is Rosebud in 1915

    Then the 1920's

    Then the 1930's

    Then the 1940's

Then the 1950's ! After World War 2 , many people started heading down to the Mornington Peninsula due to the availability of cheaper cars and the lure of cheap holidays.

The pub was built in 1946.

Prior to 1915, you had to either spend a day in a horse and buggy (unless you were in the minority that owned a car), or catch the paddle steamer from Melbourne to either Mornington ,Dromana, Rye, Sorrento or Portsea (Rosebud was too shallow). They were pretty big, they are at Sorrento in the pic in 1913.

I love that pic of Wolgan , coal was discovered there in the late 1880s and it became a flourishing shale oil refinery. nowadays a ghost town mismanaged by NPWS

Here is Bay St Port Melbourne for you mango. A bit before your time - Bay Street, Port Melbourne with the Town Hall right of centre. Signage at right includes Capstan and Argus. C.1920s.

And another of Port Melbourne in 1901. This one shows what I was saying to Godzilla in an earlier post about how people travelled down to the Mornington Peninsula. On the left, you can see a sign for the Paddle Steamer "Ozone" going to Queenscliff and Sorrento, while on the other side of the post it shows the Paddle Steamer "Hygeia" is going to Schnapper Point (now Mornington), Dromana and I think Sorrento though thre writing is faint. The steamer "Britannic" is on the right.

Now look at this one for a Health and Safety issue x 50000000 ! Imagine how many people got hit by trains on this pier. I would have loved to live in the age of ship travel.

The train looks suspiciously like some of the passenger and goods trains that ran on the Port Melbourne (then known as Sandridge) line up until the 80's Some of you from melbourne and Victoria will remember the red rattlers well.

One thing we certainly have murdered in this country is some of the beautiful architecture we once had. Today's buildings really just look like shit. Why don't developers build some apartment blocks or something in Victorian or Georgian style ? Many people are sick of looking at today's bland garbage. It was nice to see so many original buildings when I went to Tasmania earlier this year.

Below is Sydney Post office in the 1880's

An amazing photo of Bourke St Melbourne in 1882.

Bourke Street, Melbourne, looking east towards Elizabeth Street with GPO centre right. Signage on left includes Griffin's Farmers' Club Hotel, Victoria Saddle & Harness Factory, D. Altson, T. Warburton, J. Looney Saddler, Keyston Whip Maker,R. Ryland's New York Hotel, J. Whitfield Saddler, West End Loan Office, Cameron Saddler, S. Benjamin Clothier & Outfitter, G.S. Brown & Co., Central Portrait Rooms, The Melbourne Coffee Tavern and The Royal American Bars. Signage on the right includes Victoria Hall, Sanders & Co., G. Bennett and a bookseller. There are pawnbrokers on both sides of the street. Horse-drawn buggies, predecessors of the modern taxis, are lined up in the centre of the road. C.1882.

Carrum Railway Station Circa 1915. It looks like the boys would have a hard time perving on the girls with the layers of clothes they are wearing
