Default istartsurf still on computer, how to kill it?

Because I didnt check more carefully I got that rotten istarftsurf when I downloaded VLC and I thought I had managed to get rid of it but its still there.
When I clicked on a link in another austech post, the damn thing popped up and redirected me to another browser.
There are programs I see listed that claim to safely and completely remove istartsurf but I have been caught before with programs making claims that can be worse the problem itself so I wont touch them without verification they work.
Anyone have any suggestions of any names this istartsurf may be listed under or programs they know and trust to remove this completely please?
I stand unequivicably behind everything I say , I just dont ever remember saying it !!

Which browser are you using, the iStartsurf.com virus can take control of the browser Internet Explorer & Mozilla Firefox & Google Chrome, the badware can infect multiple browsers simultaneously? For each browser, there is a special method to remove the virus iStartsurf.com.

As has already been suggested above, malwaretips is one site that should be above board. What I usually do, is search for a solution using mr Google and then look at the names of the websites returned. If they are ones with which I am familiar then I am more likely to trust it than "jo blow's malware cleaner". FWIW. Some (not all) of my trusted sites are "Tom's Hardware", major anti virus producers, "Malware Bytes", Pirisoft and so forth.
I'm out of my mind, but feel free to leave a message...

Thank you for the links and instructiuons, some of which I have already done as best I could.
I found 'istartsurf' hidden away in Options (Mozilla) > Search which I removed.
I wondered about both I.E and Chrome as I both on the computer but use Firefox as the 'browser', if that 'istartsurf' was lurking in them and has to be removed 'manually' if its found there.
I ra the Malware program and its bringing up programs which I havent a clue what they are and I am not game enough to dare delete any for that reason.

Use Google to find out what the unknown programs are.

I have used Malwarebytes for years and have never found it to misrepresent what it finds.

If Malwarebytes says get rid of it, accept the advice.

A long time ago a wise man told me: "The more you learn about computers, the more you understand what you do not know. And that's hell of a lot! Often you will need the help of others." So it is in no case a disgrace to say "I have no idea".

    OFF-TOPIC

I'm running "WinPatrol" Free ( actual version is 33.6.2015.17 ) now since several years. "WinPatrol" allows me to get a better understanding of what programs are being added to my computer. It monitors important system areas that are often altered by malicious programs and alerts me if it detects any changes. This includes the startup groups (Registry and Startup folder), Scheduled Tasks, Services, IE add-ons, ActiveX controls, HOSTS file and more. For me "WinPatrol" is a good companion, often helped me - and this since I used to use Windows Vista.

    Works in Windows 10, too!
