Default Is There Anyway Of Retrieving Unsaved Photoshop Work?

I foolishly did not save some stock photos I was using for a project only copy+pasted them, and in the process of updating growl, and an apple update for Quicktime Photoshop stopped responding. It didn't say the application was not responding but every time I clicked on a window for Photoshop it just made the unhappy you can't do this sound.

I'm guessing that you are using a Mac? Am I correct? Sadly I have no experience with photoshop on any platform so I cannot even offer any advice. However, different Platforms, Linux, Apple, Windoze, all have different methods for storing temp data, so it might be possible.
I'm out of my mind, but feel free to leave a message...

you have CS6 or later, Photoshop has a Preference that saves recovery information every 10 minutes (but it can be set to 5/15/30/60 min as well).
If Photoshop crashes, and IF it has saved recovery information about the open document(s), it will try to automatically recover them (they will simply open automatically when you start Ps).
If they do not open when you start Photoshop, tough luck, they are lost.
But to me it sounds like you haven't quit Photoshop yet? If so I would dig around a bit more before force quitting to make sure there isn't just some dialog box you need to click hidden behind the main window, on another monitor, or something...
