It is a drone, an octocopter as it seems.
I was thinking myself about building a "full scale" version of my small hexacopter because the gyro controlled electronics could be used and just add bigger speed controllers.
I have seen LiPos and Motors at Hobby king that can deliver over 5kW each, so 30-40kW with 6-8 motors should be sufficient. Maybe he actually used those.
Flying over water seems sensible if something goes wrong, although I would have some form of protection around the props to avoid being minced up.

The closest thing really to the McFly Hoverboard is one of those Segway scooters which to me is a far more practical and user friendly devise than a Hoverboard would ever be.
To power up the McFly Hoverboard is going to need either a massive fuel tank or an energy source that delivers maximum effort for little consumption.
The other problem in riding a Hoverboard is it needs far more skill than the common Skate Board of today because your metres in the air and and as they say, its not the fall that kills but the sudden stop when you hit the ground.
I stand unequivicably behind everything I say , I just dont ever remember saying it !!

Hmmm, I think that is why the Canadian Hoverboard has only been tested over NICE SOFT water?
