Of course it's going to slow the speeds down, all you need do is see what happens when you kink the garden hose. The more the line gets squeezed by cars running over it, the fewer electrons can flow through. Just like when the line gets a kink in it, or has lots of bends, they've got to slow down for the corners. This has been a service announcement by you local "service" provider.

    But wait, there's more.

In what could only be described a slap to the [Turnbull's] face, nbn is now investigating providing its own POTS (analogue telephone) service in FTTN areas as, "FTTN is not reliable enough for priority medical services" (paraphrase of nbn statement). MTM truly is the gift that keeps on giving.

Any bets as to these POTS services being provided by Telstra?

Yeah that's a downside, the phones don't work during a blackout and you have to leave your modem on 24/7 for the phone to work.
    Bit of a pain really.

No no no, you don't need to know why we say a FTTP rollout would be $38 billion more [than our ever more expensive FTTN rollout]. , it just will.

No install of fibre and no request for install access.
Ring NBN and after 30 Mins on hold I am told it is Fibre to the Node.
So I ask "how does this work" and they tell me to ring my provider.
My provider tells me that they cannot connect me until the NBN install is complete.
Ring alternate provider and same answer.

Seems no one can tell me how my phone will work.

Reschs, you can find out here when the nbn will be available in your area, just type in your address:

The NBN doesn't carry voice signals so it's pretty much VOIP (Telstra call it something else).
But basically your phone plugs into the socket on your modem, the quality seems to be the same I can't notice any difference.
If you have Priority Assistance you'll need to tell them and a tech will come out and do some wiring I believe.

Not just yet, but they are working on taking that backward step.

As per original post, I have FTTN not FTTP.

As it is still copper I was not sure of the phone. I knew VOIP was an option.
I have since found out that it is not ADSL and my existing modem needs replacing. Talk about pulling teeth to get information from the NBN Co.

At home, and my workshop, NBN has no start date. The place I least need it gets it first. Grrrrr.

    Yep, mine is FTTN too.
Your RSP (ISP) will provide you with a VDSL modem.
Do NOT buy a modem yourself - NBN have a list of compatible modems, however that list is not available publicly.
If you connect a non-compatible device to the network you run the risk of NBN shutting your port down.

iinet supplied me with a Huawei hg658...seems to work OK. The voip is the only reason I kept the home phone number. It took nearly two weeks to get the phone No ported though....they blamed Telstra.

I was going to ditch it, but may as well keep it now.

I am considering a battery backup for phone, modem and high speed router.
The fact that there's a highway to hell and a stairway to heaven says a lot about the anticipated traffic flow.

In a way I am sort of happy very little will happen here with the NBN.
Too small to go either FTTN or FTTH, no 'NBN Wireless' for the same reason and its unlikely (dont want it) I would qualify for Satellite Internet as I have Mobile Broadband available here.

enf: I am considering a battery backup for phone, modem and high speed router.
IF I had NBN, would the Cordless Phone set I have with its own inbuilt battery work if the power went out as it does now?
Of course you would need an UPS for the other devises so I guess you might as well just plug the phone across too and be done with it.

Any device that requires access to an NBN connection will not work during a mains power outage if the NBN power supply does not have a back-up battery.

Customers can choose whether to have the back-up battery system or not.

You're connected to what used to be TRANSACT?

For what it's worth the nbn FTTP UPS can output up to 27 watts, or about 2 amps at the about 13 volts that it outputs, which is enough to run the NTD and a typical home router if one *cough* accidentally *cough* managed to be wired up to the UPS.

Thats what I meant but as usual badly worded it.
IF you have the NBN which is Mains Powered, it would need a form of UPS to continue working during a power outage and I was half thinking that if you have a cordless phone system attached like the the one I currently have (Telstra) which has its own standby battery, problem solved but then, why not connect the Cordless phone base to the UPS as well and be done with it ?

The way I have things set up now is I can quickly disconnect a power board from the Mains during an outage and connect to it to a small generator to run the TV, STB's and the cordless base.

This area in general is on the list 'for 2017' but more than that is a State Secret.

If nothing, he's consistent. He's been pretty much making up everything about MTM to date, so why change?

The speed issues are actually lack of CVC.
More CVC needs to purchased - you can count on slow peak period speeds every 2 weeks.
    Sometimes it's worse than ADSL!
