Default F type conectors with old COAX cable

Hey guys just doing a slight upgrade to the reception at home. However i'm not replacing the old school brown coax cable. It's defiantly in the pipeline however at this point i just don't have the time.

What i'm planning on doing is installing a new masthead amplifier and a 4way splitter, all my current plugs are the old male and female plugs.
However all the new gear these days comes with F type connections,
I bought two packets of these as there the only way i can connect to the 4way split and masthead, however i'm just making sure they are compatible with the old coax cable. I bought the crimping type that are obviously suited to RG6 cable but i'm hoping they still work on the old stuff.

    Cheers guys

Not really, you will find it does now crimp down and grip the outside sheath.
Plus you will find they do not press on very good, as the cable diameter is too small for the plugs you bought.

In saying that, you can make them work, it's just a bit of a hack.
You can also just go and buy the correct F-type connectors to suit your cable size

That old brown coax is pretty old now days, and pretty dam simple too. It would be well worth changing it for some RG6 Quad shield if you could.

I guess thats what you get when you do late night shopping at DSE, it was the only type on the shelf, i just assumed all F type plugs are suited to RG6 cable.

Whats the old cable called, it has really crappy thin shielding, so i can hopefully get some f type ones to suite tomorrow.

    It's most likely RG59.

That is why you will notice there are 2 sizes of crimp in the crimp tool you bought Or are you going to just crush them on with pliers

You can also get twist on F-Type connectors too. Tool less fitting.

Wasn't the old stuff called RG59 it had a smaller diletric and only one or two layers of shield.

Next problem with some old RG 59 cables is they had a stranded center conductor, if thats the case, say good bye to F type connectors.

Nar the RG59 had a solid center contuctor.

But it is of a smaller crossectional diameter of that of RG6.

Should still work, kind of..... To be honest, although all my Sat Cables are RG6 Quad, my FTA TV coax is 20 year old RG59, with a 4-way open circuit board style splitter, lid missing, rust and corrosion all over it, old Kingray Amp and PS, 20 year old wide band antenna with half the elements missing, built for analog.... And when i brought new Sony 1080p HD Digital TV home and plugged it in, it worked perfect. So like every good tradesman, i haven't touched it nor plan too

Wow those last replys came up fast, i looked at pictures it's hard to say. To me the shielding layer seems less then that pictured in the link above. However it still has a solid centre and sought of honey comb shaped plastic covering it.

Thats a good point, i might hit them up first.

I have a small length of RG6 cable on the floor from a foxtel IQ box and the centre core is much much thicker.. hope it works.. =/

Then it must be old RG 59 as RG 58 is 50ohm cable

When you buy your crimp tool, buy some RG6 and do a good job. After all, you can use the RG59 as a pull-through. Crimps will fit, signal will be more shielded, quite important once you start adding amplifiers.
Then your system will be up to scratch.... Then you can upgarde antennas when ever you feel.

I know, i know =) and it's comforting to know i can use the old cable to pull it through to the wall plate.... hmmm i'll have to get different wall plates. The thing is i have a mile of UNI work and this is all being done in a hurry for the Olympics :P i've already decided that at the end of the year when i have some time off i'll defiantly do it right.

Olympics??? is the Olympics on this year?

Mate if you want to be really lazy, all those old connectors you call Male and Female are known as PAL. Just go and buy some F-Type to PAL connectors and slam it all together without even using a tool or getting ya hands dirty.
