Rick, you wanted to speak to me
Yes my wife owns a LX turbo diesel Captiva auto, she loves it, I disown it and i am waiting for it to go BANG
For us there has been no problems, 5 years old from new. But do not expect an economical car, it gets 13L to 100 kms
It is a bastard to change the oil filter and service, but can be done. it is due for its 75,000 service which is change the timing belt = $750 as they have to about pull the motor out to do it, the motor was designed for north -south , not east west (since remedied) If you buy it you will earn some brownie points as it is a great shopping car, you sit high and get more equipment than most
For $5000 and in good condition i would say take the punt, if you are brave
There is a fine line between "Hobby" and "Madness"

Shit, just hearing that and 2 things come to mind, run the other way or pay the $750 while sitting back and having a coffee while smiling at the sucker doing all the hard work.

Yea and that would end up being me LOL, anyway have taken on board all replies plus after driving it, certainly didnt get me excited, I found the engine to be quiet noisy but once cruising was acceptable, I made the decision to give it a miss, for the simple reason difficult to work on if need be

Ive come across a few Nissan Patrols that offered the same perceived value for money Rick.
Then after all the reading, realised it might be cheap for a reason, even though you feel it might still be worth the gamble.

We had a Cruze in the workshop a while back with a noisey gearbox bearing. Long story short. 80k on the clock. Couldn't buy the bearing that failed from holden or a bearing shop. It was a proprietry size in the way it was machined. Sometimes we could buy a bearing and turn it to size etc but couldn't find anything. And this was a warranty used car issue so cheapest is always best. In the end had to buy a secondhand gearbox!!! Yes that's right. I'm not keen on these Daewoo poo cars.

that goes for any Daewoo sourced model , not just the Cruze ( Pooze ) . automatic gearbox valve bodies are made from too soft a material , which over a period of time will drop shavings into the oil stream destroying the gearbox.

We owned a captiva diesel had a lot of trouble with the malfunction indicator light coming on. my mechanic owns one aswell but his is a petrol and he said he wouldnt go near a diesel. The diesel does a cycle to clean the diesel particle filter by injecting more fuel in to heat it up and burn it off and this cycle often fails with the mil light coming on. The tyres were also renowned for chewing out. When our mechanic discovered a slight oil leak in the turbo that would need to be fixed in the near future he quoted us thousands to get it fixed and that is when we sold it. My cousin owns a petrol model and he loves it and hasnt had any trouble.
