    Default Holden Captiva

I have never had anything to do with this particular SUV, never worked on or driven one, its a 07 turbo diesel Captiva SX Auto, 206k's with full service history and just had major service including timing belt, its in top condition mechanically and bodily and sport 8 months registration and has clear title, I can buy it at a very reasonable price of $5000, I want to hand it over to my wife, but before I buy I would like to hear from members if its worthwhile as in, the good, bad and the ugly, your input will be appreciated as it will go towards making a decision

Son, who works in the Used Car industry says they call them Craptivas. His son in law is a head mechanic for a Toymotor dealership and has similar opinions. That said, I also have a close friend with one, and, so far it has been reliable and they do a lot of Ks every year. They've had it for at least 2 years, probably 5, I can't remember. It certainly is no luxury ride so don't expect anything flash in the comfort department, but, each to his own, you may like it.

Err on the side of caution with all the latest Holden range, astras, cruze, etc.

They are not what we expect of them and a lot of bad reports on them, unsure about the captiva however id put it into the same group as its part of the new global range and not locally made.

However at 5K its a pretty cheap set of wheels for your Mrs, my thoughts would be can i find second hand parts easily to keep it on the road.

Then it comes down to you dealing with issues as they arise.

ive only heard that the turbo diesel models spit a turbo oil feed hose , spraying oil and causing terminal engine damage if not picked up quickly.
i guess if you could research the problem , replace the hose and check everything else it should be ok.

ive driven one they go ok but nothing like the build quality of Japanese cars. the Captiva and all other small holdens come out of the Daewoo plant in Korea to my knowledge. not my cup of tea personally but if i needed one and it was cheap i could keep it going.

Exactly the reason I come to here, precise, down the line answers without the bullshit, I think i'm going to purchase, as its only a 1 owner elderly couple, the last major service including timing belt cost them $1300, and I am a diesel man and know for a fact serviced at the correct times will give many k's and reliable service, look forward to more replies I think whats a winner for me is the economy apparently 8-9 litres to the 100

Just spoke to son, He works for the Mitsubishi dealership who's associate company is the Holden/Hyundai where he spends a lot of time, too. He tells me that they suffer from multiple issues in that they need one mechanic working full time on them. They are a small country dealership and he says they average about 4 Craptivas a week. Nothing specific, however fuel and oil is a common problem resulting in engine removal. His comment was, "run the other way as fast as you can".

same as VW and european cars , few dealers will trade them hence such poor resale values.

along those lines , a dealer will always bullshit and say that whatever they have for sale are great cars , yet when you go to trade something in they tell you the truth.
so my reasoning is - if you are looking for something to buy ( captiva for example , whatever ) , go to a dealer and say you would like to trade one in. then by thier response you can guage whether that car is any good or not.

Mate, that Statesman is probably 35+ years old, 1 Mil Km on it and far less wear than a 100,000 Km 5 year old car by comparison.

pretty much any modern diesel will cost you lots once they get a few ks on them, captivas, amaroks and patrols seem to be the worst.....

the old diesel reliability is long gone.....

Not quite 35YO, it's from last century, though (just). '99 with 273000 on it. Nothing really wrong with it, we just wanted a more suitable car for our needs. I bought a Jackaroo for paddocks and stuff, and a Hyundai I45 premium for around town.

For a new car, I'm very happy with my Hyundai. From past experience with them, I've had no troubles and would recommend them. Have a look at every bit as good as the Statesman, and, surprisingly a little more room than you'd think. Even the boot is generous.

to be fair the service side of things is ok, the dealer is good and I wouldn't hesitate to do business with them again, just not anything from this brand
