Default Anyone got an idea what it cost to install a new phone line

My ADSL is dropping out a bit lately, ISP is making me jump hoops testing stuff, taking far to long to sort out.

I unplugged the first socket from the wall to the adsl filter and noticed corrosion on the pins. Plus the house is 20-25yr old and the phone wires are probably as old.

So I am curious at the moment what the cost could be for a tech to put new lines in from the A-Pit outside to house, which is about a 15mtr run.
My suburbs is due for NBN 1st quarter this year, so not sure if I should outlay anything now to get it fixed or hold my breath till I can get NBN

But I use my internet 90% for gaming and can't do jack squat at the moment.

I would have a look at your connections first - most likely the bad internet is noise from bad connections in the terminal box

Jaycar sell little squeeze connections and they're not expensive - also if you are going FTTH then your existing copper will be useless real soon

Well last time my net went bad was when netflix was launched, after 2-3 weeks it settled, but at that time I replaced all the home lan cables. The wire from the a-pit to the house was replaced about 10 years ago. And last service call over a year ago the tech replaced my a-pit connections and one further down the road.
I did have a line test done and was told something like 20v dc battery. Not sure of the means fully but I guess there is power leakage into my phone line from somewhere.

20v DC is maybe right for your area, in some places 60v DC is used for boosting long lines or at least that was what I was told by a Telstra tech when fixing a fault on my line.

20v DC on the line is stray voltage and should not be there! Telephone exchanges power their lines with 50v DC and test accordingly. Stray battery or earth should be dealt with. If you have foreign battery on the line, or earth leakage, the line will most likely sound noisy (either a hum or crackling) and probably even worse in wet weather. I would hope that the person who "tested it" made sure that it was fixed.

I am still waiting for iPRIMUS to contact me back about if or when they will fix it. So much for using the web form application for reporting a line fault.

Web the web reporting failed. So i called them, person on the phone said there was no detectable problems, and did an overnight test which no one called me back to say it was finished. Ended up calling them back and booked a tech to come to the house. so most likely have to pay a call out fee. Not happy when i know something is wrong. but i need this working, driving me nuts with drop outs and bad pings.

Few years ago I had to call a tech to run an overhead cable and it costed me $300. Not sure about the underground run, suspect it will be the same.

Well a tech come out, found 3 faults up the road and replaced the wall socket for good measure. Line sounds clearer for sure, but the internet is still crap and disconnecting. I replaced the ADSL Filter and today the modem and it's still horrible.
I have run out of ideas what I can do now. Will just have to keep complaining to the ISP and see what they can do.

Did they (ISP) slow your speed at all, before the line fault was fixed?

Given there was corrosion at the first socket, the cable to the pit may also have issues.

How many devices share the line?... A central ADSL filter/splitter usually performs much better than just a line filter.

my download speeds still appear to be the same before and after, phone line is just phone and modem. I am noticing time periods where the net is better, like after midnight till mid morning. Congestion maybe on those other times.
As for online gaming I am using WTFast which is mostly working very well, but I don't want to sign up for this service when I shouldn't need to.

telstras standard for a new install is ~$299, but am not sure if this is just to install the line and socket or just the line, then its up to you to get a private cabler in to do the rest of the work

Cost includes to the first socket in a 'standard' domestic install, or to the network boundary point in commercial premises.

I know you said it's better, but is there any noise (eg: crackle/static) on the (voice) line?

I went through the same issue with Telstra a few years ago.

Four techs later and they finally did what I asked to begin with, 2 months prior.... use a different pair in the street.

The useless call centre staff said when they tested my line it showed OK, even though they admitted they themselves could hear the crackle on the line.

ANY line noise you can hear will have a much greater affect on the data signals.

Just keep hounding them and ask for the complaint to be escalated until you get someone (in Australia) to ensure the fault is fully repaired.

Hopefully, there's a spare-pair in good condition available to use.

I would still highly recommend a central ADSL filter/splitter.

or the MDF if its a multi unit dwelling with a MDF, which the op doesnt have.

i always find it better to ran CAT 5 or 6 cable between the NBP and socket, and a lot of people seem to be doing it these days

Phone line sounds clear when ever I decide to listen to it. At least ive only had one net drop out since the tech was here. As for a central filter, where would i get one, all i see is the small plastic box the size of a box of matches. $2 at MSY or $35 at Dick Smith for the same thing.

Jaycar have one listed, but I can't see that it's an approved type.

and are the two I use and both are Telstra/Optus approved/certified.

Legally speaking, they are required to be installed by a licensed cabler.

You need an IDC terminating tool to terminate the cables.
